Wanted to make a thread about this underground scene as it’s essentially over and it was a very distinct and culturally unique period, at least for me. It seemed like it had a really bad image at the time, both by the general public and even those entrenched in the rap community, but as time goes on, I feel it will be seen more favorably, and I expect it to have a major influence on the future of hip hop.

For me I’d consider this era as “starting” with the influence of people/groups like Lil B, Raider Klan, Odd Future, Yung Lean, etc, before peaking in the mainstream as artists like LUV, Lil Yachty, XXXTentacion, Juice WRLD, Playboi Carti, $uicideBoys, Kodak Black, and while I’d say it’s all but dead now, after X and Juice died, there’s still some good unique rappers to come from there like Lil Tecca.

I was in middle school when the underground scene was really starting to take shape, in the early stages of groups like Odd Future. I mostly listened to pop music before this time, but I really started to get sick of it, as it became incredibly formulaic and corporate like, with all singers starting to sound the same. My friends would play this type of music, and while it wasn’t really my thing at first, it definitely captivated me. Even though the lyrics were not super meaningful, and a lot of the guys just looked ridiculous, I greatly admired the creativity of all the artists who were starting to put their music on here, it felt like everyone just wanted to have fun and come up with their own unique style that people could vibe with, rather than what would make them go mainstream. So eventually it became the majority of what I listened to.

Just wanted to get everyone’s thoughts, both positive or negative on this period of hip hop. Post your favorite artists, songs, your biggest complaints, which rappers you think had the stupidest face tats, I’m very curious to see how people look back on this time.

I suspect you're right about this. Grassroots scenes often get this kind of treatment. Punk rock being an easy example.
