He could possibly be a throw in to a defenseman deal but probably not anything more.

Holden/Merrill, Zykov, Schuldt, 2nd for a defenseman and an AHL contract for the contract limits offset.

Any dman that's worth Zykov, an NHL forward, and a 2nd would be unaffordable under our cap.

Probably closer to the trade deadline, maybe even a rental with retention. I think there's only about 20 games until then, and we can have Zykov in the AHL and then have him play 3-5 games in the run up. Even if Glass needs to be sent down a game or two or if they only have six defense for a game or two.

I don't think they'll give up on this season, and we would need a good sized add to help this team as it stands now.

Name a player who can help and management will trade for? They made it crystal clear there are going to be no rentals so what's left is trash like Jack Johnson. Maybe they roll the dice on Honka but he's not ready to be a top 4 guy on a playoff team.

Top 4 D are rarely moved and only become available in a fire sale like the Sens did or in some instance in free agency for exorbitant prices.. Heck Merrill could hit the market and get a McNabb type contract if things break his way.

As much as we don't get excited by guys like Merrill, Engo and Holden, that's about what's available that comes with acceptable terms for this management. It's too bad Hague didn't take a big step forward, but he is really the only likely path to another top 4 D for the next few seasons.

There's players available who can help. It would depend on who is or isn't in a playoff position around the trade deadline. Gustafsson, DeAngelo are options as they're likely on non-playoff teams, Demelo is a cheaper option but we won't know the whole market for another few months.

And they are not going to throw away this season, they would go for a rental, especially one they could possibly re-sign for two seasons after this. We will have cap (and good taxes and a solid team) for the next two seasons to sign a veteran free agent/our rental to a competitive price. And then cap for Hague when that contract expires. Or if we trade for a younger defenseman they can sign to a reasonable, more long term deal they can do that and trade someone later.

The Flyers, for example, have picked up two of their top 4, RD even, for Gudas, a 2nd and a future 3rd. Either one of Niskanen or Braun would be very good for our top 4. You can get a good defenseman if you look.

Guess we just disagree on what would actually be an upgrade.
