Mats Zuccarello has one year left on his deal and the Rangers season seems to be looking like them near or at the bottom of the Metro with or without him. Meanwhile Carolina has a need for another playmaking winger (One to play with Svechnikov on the third line.)

    Carolina gives:
Conditional 1st: (If Carolina makes the playoffs the Rangers get the 1st rounder. If Carolina misses they get the 2nd rounder.)
    3rd round pick

    Rangers give:
    Mats Zuccarello

Carolina gives up some draft capital but gets a quality forward who could be signed for another 3-4 years after this season. Plus he can replace Williams on the 2nd line whenever he retires.

The Rangers get needed draft capital for the rebuild. For a guy who they probably weren't going to re-up anyways

I think they could get more for him. Teams will be bidding high at TDL

Don’t get why Canes do this
It’s fair value for Zucc but they don’t need a rental and I don’t think the Canes want to be giving up 1sts just yet, they’re not real contenders yet. Should keep building until they’re legit cup contenders and then trade their 1sts

While that's probably true, it would be a higher risk/higher reward situation with Carolina. If they have to put the condition of making playoffs, that means they are likely going to squeak in so the pick would be a lot better than say a Nashville or San Jose pick (which might be guaranteed). Would they risk it for potentially 10+ spots?

Adam Fox and Carolinas 1st (conditional as the OP stated). They risk losing Fox for nothing anyways

Waddell said he thinks they’ll sign Fox and he was at the Canes prospect camp. He also said Fox was a key add in the trade so I don’t think they view him the same way you do.

I do agree that at the deadline Zucc should get a late 1st at least at the deadline so NYR shouldn’t take the OPs proposal.

The problem is going to be the market. You can't just say Zucc will get you a first. It depends on how many teams are sellers. His value may be a first, but if I have a market of three or four teams selling very similar players, the buyer holds the cards. Why would I give up a first if I can fill my need spending a second or a third? In short, too early to tell what the market will fetch for him.

Don't see Carolina as a fit , tbh.

I think if Zuccs is moved , it'll be to a true contender.

Is Zuc a RW? And if so, strictly a RW?

Zucc was for all practical purposes the NYR leading scorer 4 of the 5 past seasons and is up there this year too. He Will return more than most think. Maybe not from Carolina. But If dealt, Yeah

Thanks. Canes are set at RW with Teravainen, Williams, and Svechnikov. Not that Zuc wouldn't be a nice add, but if they are going to spend assets, I'd rather it be LW or preferably C.

I do agree with you though that Zucc should get a good return, even if not from the Canes.

Yeah, I don't see Carolina as a fit. It just doesn't make sense given the status of the team in being a contender. If they were even a perennial first round appearing team that was looking to make noise, I could see looking to make a splash then, but unless it's for a forward that could help catapult them to the top of the division or make some legitimate noise in the playoffs, I don't see them making a deal like this.

If anything, a more established contender makes more sense. I could see Carolina making a small move to help them make the playoffs if they're close. Maybe a goaltending upgrade.

If you can convince a particularly handsome Swedish man that the golf is that good down there, we may be able to make a deal. :naughty:

Please. There is no conditional crap. You miss the playoffs that is your problem. Nash brought back a 1st and a good prospect. Zucc will bring back a first and a very good prospect.

I don't mind conditions, but make them good. If you miss the playoffs and want to keep your pick, you give us the first and second in 2020. You miss there and want to keep your pick, You give us the first in 2021 and 2022. I'll kick this can down the road forever as long as we are getting paid interest.

But if you get an unconditional first from a team that is drafting in the last 5 or 6 of the first round, is that a win vs. a middle of the pack team that is taking a shot and will give you any pick as long as it doesn't fall in the lottery? I don't see how any decent GM who isn't rock solid sure he's not in the lottery diesn't put some sort of protection in place. I mean the Ottawa thing is literally unfolding before our eyes. You don't have to go back twenty years to learn this lesson.

Agreed. Zuccarello may return a first. He may not. His actual trade value will be defined by the market. Consider that there's been an average of 3 1sts moved over the past 4 deadlines (less on average the further back you go.) The assets that get priority when it comes to those picks are centers, defensemen and gritty wingers. Think about the supply at this point. Duchene, the center, is a guarantee for a first. Same goes for clearly superior winger Stone. Hayes is a good bet as a center. Edler is easily the best 2019 UFA on a projected non-playoff team. Lee will get preference give his net-front game. Zuccarello will also have competition from other skill wingers like Eberle and Skinner. If a more average team like Columbus or Minnesota stumbles, you can add Panarin, a superior skill player, Staal, a center, and Bobrovsky to the names ahead of him as well.

Good value, but I think the canes are still looking for long term additions to the forward core before they start giving out 1sts for rentals.

I agree and I think Zucc will bring back a better deal than Nash, which was a pretty good deal for NYR.
