This couldn’t have snuck up on the front office. The approximate price point for a long-term contract has been established for weeks. Once Gorton was unable to deal Hayes (or Zibanejad) by the end of June, the GM must have been able to see this coming.

He's speculating at best. They definitely never shopped him, but maybe a few people checked in given they blew the team up? Either way, I wouldn't trade him because his value isn't high right now and he had a good season with the underlying numbers and I'm hoping for a breakout 60+ point year

Brooks had resources when Slats was GM. He was fed info and used that to create headlines. The front office would leak info to him for obvious reasons.

Those resources no longer exist under Gorton. Brooks is now just a has-been writer who doesn’t really care about hockey or the Rangers.

I would trust a baked potato over Brooks going forward.

If this guy was available the Rangers could have gotten a good haul for him. He is a power play specialist, great shot, could skate well.... a team like Carolina,Montreal,Detroit,even Vegas or Anaheim

I tend to agree, but I think if Zbad were on that list it would have taken a very early draft pick and a pretty good prospect to have them think about it.
