Didn't look too good against St. Louis again. His 12 foot stick will always help bail him out, but he was not good. Slow, poor laterally, bad puck management. I know he will never be a healthy scratch because that isn't how things work, but since the knee injury he has been a liability out there. I hate to say it too because it's Chara, but . . .

There was a drop off from his elite days obviously, but I still think he was a solid top pairing guy who remained an excellent PK player. This year there has been a very obvious drop off. Thankfully our blueline is deeper than it's been in a long time.

In a ideal situation he's on the bottom pair, killing penalties, protecting the lead with under 4 minutes to go not playing 20+ a night on a regular basis.I wouldn't disrespect him but I'd make it clear to them he's not coming back and if he'd like another crack at the cup with a legit contender, if possible ,we'd make it happen.

I think it’s time to cut bait. I’m sure someone would take him on again, like Q. It’s painful at times to watch him. IDK. I don’t know what else to say. I like him but.....

I love the guy and I’ll always remember #33 hoisting that cup. But Father Time is undefeated and Chara isn’t going to win that battle either. If he wants to play another year or two at a reasonable price, I’d be fine with that. If not, I wish him all the best and I’ll cheer when he goes into the Hockey HOF.

if we didn't have kids needing playing time... id say pay z whatever we can afford. I don't begrudge this man a single penny if we can afford it and if we don't need the icetime

even with the backlog of kids... id still tell z he has a place if he wants it. 3rd pair... pk specialist... he can play for as long as he wants but he has to help us with our cap

sadly if he wants more than 2 mill... I have to wish him well and let him go to a new team

hopefully hes back for around 1 mill and 1 mill in bonus money and we end up with him as a lifetime bruin.

whatever drop off in play Chara has had from age, is more than offset by his value to the young guns as a mentor.

I cant name a better role model for a young defender to go learn about how to play, how to train/be dedicated and how to carry yourself off the ice.

With McAvoy, Carlo, Vaak, Grizz and Lauzon, his mentorship is far more valuable than the extra 1-2 mill he might make over market value

Yup

He also probably leads the D in even strength + shorthanded icetime. . . . and last I checked this team wasn't giving up many goals.

The future's bright with the kids, but anyone whose watched McAvoy this year knows that it aint here yet. Vaakanainen will be great, but come on, the kid's played 1 1/2 NHL games. Lets not hitch the immediate future to him.

*Much* respect for Chara, but who really knows right now if he'll be able to play next season. I would never bet against him, but there's a lot of this season left to grind out, plus possible months of playoff battling.

I would wait until the grind is over and watch how his 42 year old legs held up and make sure he can still do it...if he can't this would avoid prematurely blocking a prospect with his roster spot. Lets face it, no one plays forever and he could also help out the kids as a well respected defensive coach/consultant.

Agreed. Nothing but respect for Z, but I don’t want him coming in at anything over 3/3.5 million.

Maybe we could call this the "much respect, but . . ." thread.

I cannot imagine he would sign for less than 3, and I am really thinking 3.5 at least.
I think Donnie will go at least 4.
He needs 3rd pairing and short hand playing time.

for all he`s done for this organization and is still doing, albeit not the guy we saw 5-6 years ago, DS can`t approach him with an offer that is disrespectful. Z knows he isn`t the Norris candidate he once was but you listen to Carlo/CM talk about the impact he`s had on them, just can`t replace that easily

This same issue will crop up when Patrice Bergeron starts to really falter. It will be interesting to see what people have to say when that happens, Patrice has been pretty much immune when it comes to criticism.

Because there really hasn't been anything to criticize . . . dude's going to win the Selkie while producing at a 100+ point pace.

Hire him as a coach then as I wouldn't pay him to play hockey,he's done great things for the Organization but nobody gets to play forever

Lost in the hand wringing is that Chara is still their 2nd best defender in the D zone and the at worst 2nd best PK defenseman.

The guy is still a damn good shut down defender
