Smith's calm collective behavior to retrieve the puck after it hit a player and get it back to Hoffman in the final minute to set up the game tying goal was impressive. He has always been one of my favorites back from when he first got called up and people were not too impressed by his play but he just seems to read the game very well and although he plays a physical game he never gets out of position and his battle along the boards is probably the best on the team.

You mean Chicago doesn't. Every other team has.
If you win a cup then sure it happens. But looking over the list of the top 20 paid players Elite teams don't do the spending. When Minny brought in Parise & Sutter they were not an elite team. Resigning your guy for more money is not the same as going out and adding a 7+million dollar player.

Points aside, look at all of the other things that Smith does for this team, no wonder the coach loves the guy. He's an incredibly versatile player who plays with an edge & is very hard to play against & just happens to be an excellent PKer. Great, great deal to re-sign a special player & leader on this team & adding Wingels gives Ottawa more sandpaper, just what the doctor ordered.

Yeah I really liked Smith from the beginning. Contrary to many, I gave him a pass in his injury plagued season but he reached another level last year. Happy to see him raise the bar like that.

This argument just doesn't hold up

Let's take a simple example. The majority of people are buying the Erik Karlsson Young Guns card for 25$. YOU think that it is worth only 15$... What's the reality of the market? Will every future buyer call you to ask you your opinion on how much they should pay?

When several people are ready to pay a certain price for something, then it's not overpayment anymore, it becomes market value.

You mean Chicago doesn't. Every other team has.

Even them overpay. Look at Toews and Seabrook for example, or Bickell, etc.

ya ill eat crow on my comment of 3.25 being a tad too high. Smitty could easily grab 4.5 in the open market 5+ by dumb Gm's possibly.

Holy **** what a sweet player,
- Can win faceoffs like a mother****er
- plays well on the fourth/third/second line
- most likely getting back to back 20 goal seasons, can snipe, or score the garbage goal.
- Sticks up for his teamates, and can get under the other teams skin
- Has above average wheels, hands, and can play with grit.

this zack smith is more than what we hoped of him from his 11-12 rookie year.

Still think he is one of the very most valuable members of the squad in terms of contribution on the ice combined with his contact. Shares that title with Karlsson considering the contract he is on (until his inevitable raise of salary in the coming years).

Absolutely hated greening smith and condra making the team then when they all had that bad year i wanted them gone! Smiths dumb penalties and attitude to not thinking he is a 3rd/4th line guy made it worse....well zac smith has a been an excellent surprise with timely goals, grit, great defensive play, the ability to play up and down the line up whilst acknowledging thats his role and accepting it makes smith an exceptional player for his role!
Gladly eat crow on this one

Can we just take a moment to appreciate this fantastic deal for what is easily our most versatile player? Absolute tank last night too, 4th star by TSN1200.

Pots 25 goals last year in a top 6 role. Starts the playoffs at 4th line C. Has since played almost every forward position over the course of the playoffs, and is now Brassard's C.

Also, hopefully this deal sets a bar that Pageau can't ask higher this offseason (especially as an RFA to Smith's UFA).

Not really true take Ny and Redden.

Thanks Glen!

In all seriousness, though, that was almost ten years ago. Still, look at what Vancouver gave Eriksson last year. Or what Toronto Gave Clarkson a few years ago. Edmonton with Lucic. Seems like every halfway decent FA gets term and dollar.
