Love this line - taken from TSN's write up on it.

Great deal, given the past performance.

Must admit I was definitely in the crowd of "One Season Wonder" but who knows, maybe he is solidifying his place as a legit player.

at the same time......we are very very saddened by the news clarke will not be able to join the team due to his concussions

Smith has had 1 20 goal season to date. I don't see this as a home town discount just because other teams would give more. I see this as a fair contract for what he brings.

Of course its a fair contract for what he brings, but its the exception not the rule. Most NHL contracts are no where near 'fair for what they bring', especially where UFAs or pending UFAs are concerned. He most certainly could have got more on the market; leaving money on the table is a hometown discount.

That is the literal definition of a hometown discount. It doesn't matter what you think is fair pay for what he brings. What matters is how other teams around the league would pay him.

anything can happen from now to the July 1st. He cashed in now.

Depending on the number of years, it should be lower as Pageau is still on RFA years. Something around 6.0 for 3 years

i should have been more clear. i meant the deal smith is currently on, and by that i meant in between his cap hit (1.8875 mil) and his current salary (2.35 mil). i usually try to be more clear when i post, but i was really tired and mad that lazy post, lol.

He has security now, he likely would have collected more July 1st. Some GM would make it happen. Smith is a very useful player.

Its always a bit of a crap shoot for a UFA, but in Smith's case it seems he saw a good thing with the Senators and the new coaching staff, a fair contract offer, 4 years of security and a limited no trade clause that gives him some say in his career.
Maybe job satisfaction and QOL played a role in his decision, not just the almighty $.

He could go on a hot streak and hit 25 goals again (he's on pace for 20)

a 2x25 goal scorer who can drop the gloves and is good defensively could have gotten 4-5 mil.

This is a good deal for us.

Remember when this guy looked like 2009 Erik Karlsson? greasy flow, no facial hair little manlet

Now he arguably has the manliest look in the team other than Boucher's scar face. and the only one (seems like it) that can actually grow a playoff beard.

Guys like Stone, Smith, and Brassard are ones who I really want to step it up and lead in the playoffs. Here's hoping it happens fairly soon.

I'd like to hear from Foligno Quantum Leap based on the Greening thread.

FQL doesn't like Smith at all. He was criticizing him a lot, even last year.

Must admit I was definitely in the crowd of "One Season Wonder" but who knows, maybe he is solidifying his place as a legit player.

Zack Smith has actually been a lot more consistent than people think... He just reached new levels after his injury riddled season... Since his sophomore season at 23 y/o :

Year - Age - Games - Goals/GP - Assists/GP - Pts/GP

2011-12 23 81 0.17 0.15 0.32
2012-13 24 48 0.08 0.23 0.31
2013-14 25 82 0.16 0.11 0.27
2014-15 26 37 0.05 0.03 0.08
2015-16 27 81 0.31 0.14 0.44
2016-17 28 43 0.26 0.26 0.51

If bananas are are 1.65$/Kg in 19 stores and the 20th store has them at 1.25$/Kg, don't you think it's a bargain? Or we can't say that "just because" other stores sell them for more?

Like OCOC says that is the literal definition of a hometown discount. It doesn't matter what you think is fair pay for what he brings

No, what you said was clear enough (now that I have read it again), I just overlooked the word "current" in " like smith's current deal". My apologies ;)

Points aside, look at all of the other things that Smith does for this team, no wonder the coach loves the guy. He's an incredibly versatile player who plays with an edge & is very hard to play against & just happens to be an excellent PKer. Great, great deal to re-sign a special player & leader on this team & adding Wingels gives Ottawa more sandpaper, just what the doctor ordered.

So Bautista took a home town discount? Anyone can say he would have gotten more as a UFA. Bad teams overpay all the time. It doesn't mean that is what he is worth. He knew what he wanted going in and said both sides were not far off.
