Agree with what Edge is saying. No reason for him to turn pro right now. Rangers Blueline is still a work in progress and they’ll be adding more prospects to the big club in that position soon anyway. Marinate for him, we got time.

Yeah, and at age 21 (next year) he's still eligible for a 3-year ELC. It really keeps the ELCs rolling in. Example below:

Regarding Jones, I thing that I believe people are forgetting about is how long he has actually spent time as a defenseman

That makes no sense. So he'll play like 5-10 games after quarantine and we burn a year on the ELC? What's the point?
it probably don't matter much,
he probably plays most/all of '21-22 and '22-23,
which would have been Jr/Sr years at UMass, in Hartford
so his next deal is just likely incremental

To entice Jones to sign. This way he gets his signing bonus paid twice in 3 months. Great way to convince a kid to sign

Do you think the organization had legitimate worry/concern about him not signing and doing all 4 NCAA years and becoming a FA?

Seems like an odd move being is that the player was just saying he didn't think he was ready to play pro hockey due to a reason that had nothing to do with his team winning or not winning the recent championship...

What's likely to happen next season? If Lundkvist earns a roster spot (as anticipated), I can't imagine we would see Jones on his left side... Does that mean (barring injuries) Jones is likely to spend most of next season in the AHL? And if so, do we essentially use up 2 years on his ELC where he'll see minimal NHL playing time?

Not that but they did themselves a favour with this contract structure

With it kicking in this season, he is RFA in 2023. Making him RFA a year early, being a good thing for Jones. On the flip side, he won't accrue 3 pro seasons until he is RFA, making him a 10.2(c) status player. Due to that, he won't be eligible for offer-sheets, nor for salary arbitration. It makes things a little easier to negotiate for an extension in 2 years.
