I'm no good at lists but out of some listed, here's what I think my ranking would be.

1. The Velvet Underground and Nico by The Velvet Underground (1967)
2. Lick My Decals Off, Baby by Captain Beefheart (1970) * Includes all-time favorite song; Peon.
3. Marquee Moon by Television (1977)
4. Tago Mago by Can (1971)
5. Safe as Milk by Captain Beefheart (1967)
6. The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground (1969)
7. White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground (1968)
8. Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City by Kendrick Lamar (2012)
9. Illmatic by Nas (1994)
10. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine (1991)

Just did 10 based on the albums listed here and was still very difficult.

Other albums I love but weren't listed:

Shiny Beast by Captain Beefheart (1978)
Doc at the Radar Station by Captain Beefheart (1980)
Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division (1979)
Is This It by The Strokes (2001)
Section.80 by Kendrick Lamar (2011)
Tyranny by Julian Casablancas (2014)
Phrazes for the Young by Julian Casablancas (2009)
Transformer by Lou Reed (1972)
Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order (1983)
Technique by New Order (1989)
Eye Bamyasi by Can (1972)
Le Dôme by Jean Leloup (1996)
La vallée des réputations by Jean Leloup (2002)
L'amour est sans pitié by Jean Leloup (1990)
Monster Movie by Can (1969)
Future Days by Can (1973)
Salad Days by Mac DeMarco (2014)
2 by Mac DeMarco (2012)

Certainly missing some. Not a big music head though - more interested in movies/shows and literature - while also being more a songs guy than an album one.

^ Hey, did you warm up to Beefheart's harsher vocals over the last year or something? I remembered you finding them hit or miss, but that's a lot of Beefheart albums showing up on a favorites list.

Depends when, but yes, while I still do find his vocals hit and miss, it's largely clicked and that howling and growling high-octave voice has grown on me. I still can't get through Trout Mask Replica though. And again, the first 10 albums are solely based on what was posted on this page and the other one are in no particular ranking while also being what's mostly on heavy rotation right now so take it with a grain of salt, I suppose. I do think of Shiny Beast as Beefheart's best work from start to finish though, although Lick My Decals Off, Baby has the more memorable and inspired moments.

Although The Velvet Underground and Nico probably is my favorite album of all-time. Perhaps Unknown Pleasures gives it a run for it's money. And the Can inclusions are solely thanks to your recommendation - would have never heard of them otherwise - so thanks! :yo:

Awesome. Happy that Tago Mago ended up being your favorite Can album, too, rather than the more accessible ones.

FYI, if you can warm up to the idea of repetition in music, I still think Neu! fits right in with a lot of what you seem to like. Especially if you're more of a single-track guy than an album guy (the only thing keeping them from being my favorite band is that it never quite came together perfectly for any one particular album like other top-end artists). Most things that get influenced by Unknown Pleasures or Can, also tend to get influenced by Neu!. It's less melodically complex than the others, but goddammit, that perfect, minimalistic sound is completely untouchable in terms of raw satisfaction, IMO.

Fela Kuti might be worth looking into if you like Can, as well. But again, more focus on repetition.

I don't know how you guys can get a ranked list of 25. It would be splitting hairs to get an unranked list of 50 for me.

Yeah, Tago Mago is phenomenal with Oh Yeah being the stand-out track. It's my second favorite song from Can after Tape Kebab from the John Peel sessions. And yeah, repetition over a long period of time in music tends to give me the same feeling ambient music does - sounds good for a while then I snap out which leaves me bitter and unfulfilled - so I tend to shy away from it. I'll listen to both tracks tommorow while at work and I'll get back to you although I think I may have already listened to Negativland.

Here's an album I forgot off my listen that I think is absolutely brilliant though: Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt by John Frusciante (1994)

Here are a couple of songs from the album I find phenomenal and you might enjoy.

Here's John Frusciante and Flea covering Peon by Beefheart. It's absolutely cute as Frusciante struggles to nail it perfectly and the drummer hypes the crowd to encourage Frusciante.

Not big into RHCP but I've always found this track spectacular. It's just Flea on the trumpet and Frusciante on the guitar.

I know you found the Jean Leloup tracks enjoyable but if you want to give it another shot, here's a couple that I love from him.

Sorry - but not really - for the barrage of songs.

Thanks. I tried them, but to be honest, although they're pleasant and I don't have anything specifically against them, I don't really get much out of these. Interesting that Peon would even be on their radar, though.
