Too be honest you should ask this question to Slayer fans, every song sounds the same. You need to listen to DT again to tell how unpredictable the songs are. The song structure could be the same per songs, but the unpredictability that Portnoy does on the drums (as a fellow drummer) is pretty insanely awesome.
Two new questions, then: does it help if you are a "drummer" or a musician to get it? (In other words, as in much jazz, knowledge and expertise with an instrument is close to a requirement if one is to really "get" the band). Second question: what do you think of Mangini as Portnoy's replacement? Even though I wasn't enthralled by the music in the concert movie, Mangini was awesome, by my standards anyway (and "awesome" is not an adjective that I use much).

1) To a point yes it does, because the talent and creativity is amazing to listen to.

2) Mangini is really talented as well, but Portnoy was a better song writer and knew what drum beats would match with what. Even though Mangini can play the hardest Portnoy parts with ease, he doesn't really have the creativity in past DT albums. We can't really blame Mangini for this, because whatever drummer they picked would not be the same compared to Mike.

Good explanations. Thanks.

I don't know how to state this question so it sounds nice, not snarky, because I'm not trying to piss off Dream Theater fans. But here it is: how long did it take for you to tell the band's songs apart? I am admittedly a casual listener at best, but it seems to me that in their concert movie anyways most of their songs have nice, though not especially memorable, beginning-type beginnings and then after a bit of that, everybody just starts ostentatiously displaying all of their considerable chops in one massive jumble of hundred mile per hour music making, most of which sounds excruciatingly similar to me. Is it just me or can the band be pretty impenetrable at times? Second question: if one accepts the previous reasoning as not being totally irrational, what then makes Dream Theater more than a band of mere flashy show-offs?

Used to be a big DT fan, not as much anymore, but I think one of the hallmarks of the progressive rock ideal that DT evolved from is that their "songs" aren't necessarily supposed to sound that different. You're supposed to experience the album as one big piece of music. From one album to another they actually sound quite different.

The flashy show-off thing is a valid criticism and honestly one of the reason I've lost some of my enthusiasm for that particular band. Too often they fail to put the flashiness into context. But I wouldn't say it's all flash and no substance, either.

As a recent Dream Theater fan, I can understand what you mean. However, have you listened to Images and Words? Killer album.

- Ensiferum with Mäenpää was beastin', new Ensiferum I could understand why you hate them.
- Dream Theatre is a beast of a band, but since Portnoy left it hasn't been the same.
- Moonsorrow > Everything else, surprised you don't like them, but I am a huge folk metal fan.
- I don't know I think I should've had Bolt Thrower higher, they are a pretty damn underrated band.

Dream Theater was always 'meh' to me. I like progressive rock a lot and some prog metal as well but DT never was my thing. I'll probably give that Moonsorrow album a re-listen since it has been a long time when I last listened to it.

I've only heard "Victory Songs" from Ensiferum so I'll probably listen the s/t because it's a Mäenpää-era album. And yeah, Bolt Thrower is underrated as hell. Really awesome discography. Too bad that mr. van Drunen never recorded a studio album with them, that would've been freaking awesome (he did sing two years in Bolt Thrower, in case somebody didn't know).

I listened My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and it was a very mediocre album IMO. The singer was quite nice so a plus from that but other than the singer, it was just... noise. I'll listen it second time still though. 2/5

If you like Progressive Rock/Metal, check out Magic Pie (they're becoming my favourite Prog Band). I agree that van Drunen would have been pretty sick, but concerning the case with Bolt Thrower I prefer Karl Willetts style overall.

Another album I forgot was Emissaries and/or The Epigenesis by Melechesh (I enjoyed both albums).

I know LITTLE/NOTHING about music but my best friend suffered thru terrible depression when he was young and he said the ONLY thing that kept him from ending his life was Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and the hope it gave him.

Today, he is a successful husband/father of 2 wonderful kids. He is the best person I know. He has the best life I know. And my life would be lacking without him in it.

So, I would put this at #1 on my list.

There a story about the late comedian Bill Hicks how one day during his struggle with cancer, a friend played Astral Weeks for him. At the end he thought it was terribly depressing, but playing it again and hearing the words "to be born again" in the opening song really uplifted him, and it ended up becoming his favorite album.

Personally, the album never "clicked" with me the way it has with others. I like the album, it does grow on you, but still sounds like a long jam session at points. However, the title track "Astral Weeks" is undeniably one beautiful song.

I bought/listened to it (out of respect for my friend) but it was over my head. Having said that, many music critics have called it one of the greatest albums of all time.

My buddy has a strong knowledge of music and is a PHD in Human Genetics - he is no dummy. I just wish I understood and shared what he got out of it.

The Beatles -- Rubber Soul (while I give the edge to the original UK release, I have a more intimate attachment to the North American version; Rubber Soul just doesn’t sound right to me unless “I’ve Just Seen a Face” is the opening track)

The Beatles -- Help

I could list a few more Beatles albums, but to avoid redundancy…

The Cure -- The Head on the Door
Teenage Fanclub -- Songs from Northern Britain
Belle & Sebastian -- Push Barman to Open Old Wounds
Cat Stevens -- Matthew & Son
R.E.M. -- Fables of the Reconstruction
The Smiths -- Strangeways, Here We Come
Duran Duran – Rio
Nick Lowe -- Jesus of Cool
U2 -- The Unforgettable Fire
Pink Floyd -- The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
God Help the Girl (self-titled)
Teenage Fanclub -- Grand Prix
The Rutles -- All You Need is Cash
The Police -- Synchronicity
R.E.M. -- Automatic for the People
The Royal Tennenbaums (*a soundtrack album, but with some original compositions by Mark Mothersbaugh)
The Northern Pikes -- Secrets of the Alibi
Rush -- Moving Pictures
Morrissey -- Viva Hate
Paul Simon – Graceland
The Pogues -- Peace & Love
The Housemartins -- Now That's What I Call Quite Good
Sloan -- Twice Removed
The Grapes of Wrath – Treehouse

I just picked up The Monkees new album, “Good Times!”. The deluxe version has six tracks I enjoy, which probably pushes it toward an “honorable mention”.

Several albums above I rarely listen to anymore, but they left a lasting impression.

3. The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness

Cool thread.. It would take me a while to construct my top 25. I'll just give a few favorites.. Smashing Pumpkins would be in there, but with Siamese Dream.

Also have,
Rollins Band: The End of Silence
Guns N Roses: Appetite for Destruction
Failure: Fantastic Planet
Soundgarden: Louder than Love
Ween: Pure Guava
