If the Leafs are doing good, I'm cheering for them. If they're struggling and the Hurricanes are doing good, I'm a Hurricanes super-fan. If both are struggling, I'm not watching hocjey.

All I have are secondary teams... really depends on how hardcore a fan you are of your first team. The more hardcore = the less you have a secondary team and the more you hate that team the least.

My team is 2000 miles away. In order to see some live hockey I started going to some games of a team that is 100 miles away. After a few years, it was impossible to not start liking and following that team as well. Even if it is the Sabres.

I don't want to wait days to cheer for my team again!!

I want to enjoy hockey EVERY DAY! :)

I cheer for several teams. And, no, they have never met in the final.

But there are LEVELS of favorites:

LEVEL 1:
:nashville:caps:nucks

LEVEL 2:

:habs:edmonton

LEVEL 3:

:sabres:sharks

Bruins, Rags, Isles, Flyers, Avs, Jets i have cheered for AGAINST teams i HATE! But there is no lasting joy. Nor do commit myself to following them closely.

I couldn't care less (wouldnt watch a regular season game between these teams): Canes, Panthers, BlueJackets, Wild, Stars, Coyotes, Blues, Sens.

I really DISLIKE Flames, Leafs, Devils, Penguins, Wings, Kings, Blackhawks. I really enjoy watching one of my teams playing one of these (though often ending in heartbreak :( ).

Being a fan of hockey comes before being a fan of a certain team. I personally only have an emotional investment in the Avalanche, but I enjoy watching other teams play. My opinion is that you can cheer for whatever and however many teams as you want, but I draw the line at those who jump from team to team and try to play the part of a die-hard fan. Even then, I'll take a bandwagon fan over those idiots who think anywhere the temperature rises above 35°C surely can't have a proper hockey market.

I have them in tiers. My favorite team, the Caps, is far and away the #1.

The second tier was for a long time a very exclusive group that included the Blues and Kings because they were non-rivals with fans who’d been suffering as long as I had. I also lived in LA for 10 years so I also came to wish them well for that reason. Canucks would have been in this group too but some fan/media interactions I’ve had made me dislike them a little.

After that, if I had an order of preference, I don’t hate seeing Western conference teams (esp non-Cup winners) succeed. Also hard to root against Columbus, Florida, Ottawa, Islanders, and Hurricanes unless they’re competing directly with my team.

It's cheap because someone grows up with a team. They go through the successes and heartaches. Said team is part of one's family. Then one decides to cheer for another team? Pfff.

Your team is part of your family? If I were to say grow up cheering Detroit but living in a city with no NHL and then I move to Tampa am I not allowed to now cheer for my home city team as well? That’s somehow cheap?

I’m a third-generation Bruins fan and we go back pretty much to the founding of the team. “Black & Gold ‘Till I’m Dead & Cold.” If the Bruins won every game by ten goals and won the Stanley Cup every year it would never get old for me. I’m a FANATIC.

However...

I like the Ottawa Senators. “Why,” you ask? Great question. I root for the Senators because I like underdogs, and not only is the TEAM an underdog, but so are the fans.

Between the time the old Sens went under in 1934 and the new Sens were founded in 1992, most people in Ottawa were in one of two camps - the Leafs camp, or the Habs camp. Then the Senators come along and they’re immediately behind enemy lines in their own city!!! I greatly admire the fans in Ottawa that left the safety of those ‘established’ teams to back the expansion Senators franchise. That took some huevos, and I respect that.

As a Bruins fan, I can appreciate that the Senators two biggest rivals are the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs. And I just love it whenever the Sens stick it to their Original Six rivals. Don’t get me wrong - I don’t own any Sens gear or anything like that, but I like when they win.

It’s ok to “Like” another team but you can’t “Cheer” for another team...I freaking love the Jets..and kinda like a few other teams such as The Bruins and Habs.. but if they are playing my Jets I freaking loath them...

As a kid, I was a Bruins fan. That was in the Bobby Orr years. I kind of lost touch with NHL hockey during the reign of the Flyers into the mid 1980s.

I picked up Nashville from the beginning in 1998. I still watch the odd Bruins or Devils games, but I don't own any of their jerseys.

My daughter liked the Devils and I watched games with her. She could recognize a neutral zone trap by the time she was 8. She loved the 2000 and 2003 SC wins. If she ever has a pet, she will probably call it Niedermayer or Brodeur. She follows the Preds closer than I do. I rarely beat her to team news.

I'm first a Bruins fan, but my second favorite is the Dallas Stars, since they are geographically the closest team to me. In the days before NHL Center Ice, I could get many Stars games on regional cable channels, so they became my adopted second team.

I also venture to Dallas when possible to take in Stars games. Their building is great, their game day presentation is superb, and the team typically ices an entertaining product.

I only post on the Bruins' board as I think there's a hockey 'code' about that.;)

Last year was interesting,as the two almost ended up facing each other in the Final.

It’s amazing to me that people feel the need to “police” this sort of thing. I would like to think that anyone over 20 would understand that it makes literally zero difference how someone decides to divide up their loyalty to corporate franchises in the entertainment industry.

I've been knocked for this countless times. Who cares? To the folks who say it suggests you're not a "true or diehard fan"... Get out of here. You don't have a clue about how someone follows the game.

FWIW, I'm a fan of one team now, but have had multiple teams in the past. The only team I've always cheered for is the Sharks though.

Strong opinions on this one I see...

I grew up in Toronto but the Avalanche team in the 90s and early 00s grabbed me as a kid. I loved the team and just started rooting for them. Did not really like the Leafs until I got a bit older but found it very difficult not rooting for our home team. After seeing the Raptors win (big Raps fan) it was awesome to see the city come together and rally behind a team. Yes I’m an Avs fan, I’ve been to every Avs Leafs game as long as I can remember and always have and will root for the Avs. That being said I do like the Leafs and would love for them to win a cup.

I am and always will be a Habs fan. With that I said I do not have any secondary teams but their are certain players that I love to watch.

This may be a weird one but one of my favourite players is Patrice Bergeron. I know he plays on a rival but he is just smart of a hockey player.

I have multiple other players that I just love to watch.

I think following and having a soft spot for other teams/players is alright but seriously supporting a second team is lame imo. Just kinda means you're not that tied to your "first" imo
