Off the top of my head, Matt Nieto put in some good years for the Avs PK.

Search Hockey Transactions

I love this site. Search "waivers" under player/coach/exec name and filter by team.

For the Devils, it looks fairly limited. Looks like we claimed Ryan Carter in October 2011 and he was a great 4th liner in our 2012 playoff run.

For the Kings, I'd probably go with Kyle Quincey. LA got a 38 point season out of him before trading him for Ryan Smyth.

Probably Sergei Samsonov off waivers from Chicago in 2008. He put up 32 points in 38 games down the stretch, and played a supporting role in a Conference Finals run the following season.

If not him then Curtis McElhinney from Toronto in 2019. He played some really good clutch hockey during a Conference Finals run that spring.

Lost? Michael Leighton to the Flyers.

The Oilers haven't really had any outstanding waiver pickups. Backup goalies, face punchers, bums who never should have been on an NHL roster, past their primer former stars (Nedved, Anderson), and a couple of energy guys sprinkled in. If you go way back to the 80s we had a couple of guys who were important depth pieces to cup winning teams, like Dave Lumley and Mark Lamb. Other teams have fared much better with the waiver wire.

I think Steve Begin was a waiver pick also. He’s my choice. Glen Metropolitan may have been also. He did well for a few years with the Habs.
He was decent, but Byron has had 3 seasons(one prorated) of 20+goals where he also had 35-45 points while being excellent defensively.

Surprisingly slim pickings for the Maple Leafs. You can make a case for Dominic Moore, who was a decent center who clicked with Jason Blake.

But my answer would be Wade Belak. Claimed from Calgary, and spent like 7 years as an enforcer and locker room glue. Teammates, coaches, and fans loved Belak. He's dearly missed.

Begin was indeed. Both from Calgary. While Steve provided a great deal of energy, his overall impact doesn't compare imo.

Probably Housley for the Flames.

And yes, Martin St Louis was signed as a UFA, he was exposed in the expansion draft, went unclaimed and was bought out. Good on him for turning his career around but at that point he was not good enough to hold a roster spot.

Off the top of my head, Matt Nieto put in some good years for the Avs PK.

Patrik Nemeth put in a couple of decent years for the Avs PK too.

Jeff Odgers put in some good years for the Avs punching faces, back in the day.

Mark Barberio put in some good years for the Avs eating nachos and being the 7/8D.

But, I'd agree, Nieto is probably the best.
