What was your favorite NHL game and favorite International contest?

For me, largely because of my age, my favorite two are:

May 19, 1984- Dave Lumley hits the empty net and the Oilers complete their spanking of the Islanders, dethroning a great champion and true dynasty. I was thirteen and thought I was in heaven.

Canada vs USSR, Canada Cup semi-final 1984. I know most people go goo-goo over the whole Gretzky-Lemieux thing in 1987, but that game floats my boat. Coffey breaks up the two on one and converts right to puck-carry mode in the way only he could transition and hauls it up the ice. He blasts the puck for the Bossy tip in overtime winner. Those were cold war days and that was one awesome moment.

My favorite game of all time is Game 8 of the 1972 Summit Series. I never saw it live but I do have it on DVD and it's the best game I have ever watched. There was so much emotion and you couldn't write a better ending. Scoring with 34 seconds remaining is unreal.

My favorite NHL game was game 6 of the 1994 Stanley Cup finals. I really thought that the Canucks were going to win game 7 after that one.

Toronto vs Ottawa game 5 2000 playoffs - Steve Thomas scores in OT in an exciting game.

Canada vs USA 2002 Gold Medal Game - Don't need to say anything

Dallas vs New Jersy game 5 and game 6 in the 2000 finals - I'm not a fan of either team but wow I never seen a goalie duel like that in my life. Belfour puts on a performance of a life time in game 5.

Calgary vs Vancouver game 7 2004 playoffs - Matt Cooke ties it up with 5secs only to have Gelinas score a quick one in OT to end a great game and great series.

Canada vs Russia game 8 1972 Summit Series - Never watched it live but the game was so emotional and had so much hate. Too bad we don't see this kind of hockey any more.

Canada vs Czech 2004 World Cup - Kinda under rated game. Czech scoring 7secs after Canada took the lead in the 3rd was something. Lecavalier scoing in OT was great.

I have three favorite international games. In order.....

1)USA-USSR 2-22-80

2)Game Three, 1995 World Cup Final USA-Canada

3)Los Angeles Kings- CSKA (Soviet Central Red Army)
The Kings lost 5-2 (Marcel Dionne had both goals), but to see the Red Army in person was simply a thing of beauty.

Favorite NHL game may be Game One of the 1993 Finals, and Game Two came within 2 minutes of making the list :banghead:

In my lifetime...2006 game 6 Oilers/Red Wings. It felt like getting rid of a 7-year itch. I'd say the game 5 of the '90 finals, but game 6 vs. the Wings is so fresh. My favourite game not involving my team? Kings/Leafs 1993, game 7.

As a Canada fan, 1987 Canada Cup final takes it.
As a Habs fan, nothing beats game 2 of the 1993 finals when Desjardins completed the hat-trick in overtime. I knew we were going to win the Cup then.

"The Revenge Game"

I watched for the fights I knew would happen, but was floored by how great the game was.

I don't know if its the best game of all time for me, But It was my first hockey game in around 1970 , The Bruins trailing 4-2 late in the third, score to make it 4-3 and with less than 1 minute the Bruins put their goalie out and a habs players take a good wrist shot but like a goalie orr stop the puck with his glove, take the puck go all the way to the habs zone and score a beauty  I was about 5 or 6 years and I never lost that moment.

NHL: 94-95 Stanley Cup Finals Game 2: Stevens leveling Kozlov and his famous "You're next" comment to the Detroit bench was a thing of beauty. The looks on the Wing's faces told you there was no way they were going to come back.

International: Switzerland thumping Canada 2-0 in the Olympics.

Games attended:

1. Game 6 1987 Stanley Cup Finals - Flyers win 3-2, on two late goals to force a 7th game against the greatest of the Edmonton teams.

2. Game 6 1985 Wales Conference Finals - Leading 1-0 late in the 2nd period, Flyers are two-men short against the Stastny bros. & company .... Dave Poulin intercepts a pass and goes the length of the ice to beat Mario Gosselin. Pelle Lindbergh completes the shutout and send the Flyers to the 85 Cup Finals.

3. USA - Finland 1980 Olympics - just two days after the "Miracle on Ice" the US completes the improbable dream, scoring three times in the 3rd period to win 4-2.

2003 Swedish championships finals, game 4. Tomi Kallio scored an unexpected goal (deflection) from the blue line in the 3rd overtime period too win the gold for Frölunda.

2004 Frölunda vs. Leksand. Just another game during the season but Frölunda was down 0-4 with 5 minutes of the game left. Scored 3 goals in 3 minutes and then tied it at 59:59. Won the game in the shoot out.

2005 Swedish championships finals, game 5. Again in overtime after a 0-0 game, Niklas Andersson scores early in the first overtime period too win the gold for Frölunda.

2006 Olympics games final between Sweden and Finland. What an amazing game, almost got an heart attact in the final minute when Lundqvist robbed Jokinen.

2006 World Championships final. Hockey pornography.

And of course 1994 Olympics and 1998 World championships.

As a longtime NYI fan, it's easy to point to Nystrom's Cup winner in Game Six of the '80 Finals. But a contest that I will always remember fondly from that dynasty period is Game One of the '83 Finals vs. Edmonton.

This was supposed to be the Oilers year, the season in which they overtook NYI. Isles sleep-walked through the regular season, finishing second in their division. Edmonton, meanwhile, simply steamrolled through the regular season and playoffs, displaying offense like no team ever before.

Game one in Edmonton, Bossy is a scratch due to a severe cold, IIRC. From start to finish, Oilers, led by #99, Messier, Kurrri and Anderson, BARRAGE Isles, who play a bend but do not break game to PERFECTION for 60 minutes. (Messier tries to set the tone physical, with an early high speed, mid-ice cross check to the face of Isles dman Tomas Jonnson.) Somehow, the Isles find a way to get a Duane Sutter goal in transition and sit on that lead until a Ken Morrow empty netter, for a 2-0 win. Quite possibly the single best display of goaltending I've ever seen, by Billy Smith.

Set the tone for the rest of the short series, which NYI swept. It was the Isles last Cup (prior to Edmonton wrestling the Cup away the next season), and it was a masterful display of a dynasty champion in its last stages, simply finding a way to win. Needless to say, the Oilers learned a lot from that series loss as well.

***

As far as other NHL games go, NYR/NJD, Game Seven in the '94 Conference Finals is also memorable.

Russia defeating Canada in this years Olympics

I don't mean to be critical of anyone's elections because we all like different games for different reasons but this one seems odd and out of place to me.

What is it aboutt his game that does it for you?

I watched it and honestly, it bored me.

My favorite international series was actually Rendevouz '87 between the NHL and the Soviets.

Held in Quebec City during winter carnival, both teams were able to win one game. The games were tight, cleanly played and Valeri Kamensky showed what he could and should have become.
