In a best-on-best tournament happening right now where you pick the players for your team, how would it look?

Finland for me:

Laine-Hintz-Rantanen
Teräväinen-Aho-Kakko
Haula-Barkov-Kapanen
Granlund-Koivu-Donskoi

Lindell-Heiskanen
Heinola-Ristolainen
Nutivaara-Niku

Rinne
Rask

Vatanen would get in over all of these. Even Määttä is ahead of Niku and Heinola.

Russia:

Radulov - Kuznetsov - Ovechkin
Panarin - Malkin - Kucherov
Dadonov - Namnestikov - Tarasenko
Kovalchuk - Barbashev - Svechnikov

Sergachev - Provorov
Zadorov - Zaitsev
Orlov - Kulikov

Bobrovsky
Vasilevsky

Kaprizov? Gusev?

Rantanen - Barkov - Laine
(Any team would struggle against this line, just look at the size and skill. Top-5 sniper in the NHL and top-5 playmaker combined with top-15 winger)

Teräväinen - Aho - Granlund
(Carolina connection which destroyed many top teams last season combined with highly skilled Granlund)

Donskoi - Hintz - Kakko
(Solid 3rd line, Hintz has been the best forward for Dallas and everyone knows Kakko's upside. Donskoi is the weakest link by far but is a solid 3rd liner for any NHL team)

Haula - Koivu - Kapanen
(Purely defensive line, very good PK guys. Also includes one of the fastest skaters in the league and Koivu is really good at faceoffs, also huge leader)

Heiskanen - Lindell
(Lindell is amazing defensively, gives more space for Heiskanen to do his thing)

Risto - Nutivaara
(Nothing special, solid NHL players but nothing more or less)

Vatanen - Niku or Heinola
(Weakest link of the team. Heinola has huge upside but if this tournament was held tomorrow..)

Rask
Rinne
Raanta
(This part wouldn't be a problem)

1. Canada
2.USA
3. Sweden or Finland

Nice work, but personally I would make a few changes (in some cases just in position or line).

Bergmann - Draisaitl - Kahun
Eisenschmid - Michaelis - Macek
Rieder - Sturm - Kuhnhackl
Bokk - Hager - Tiffels
Plachta, Stützle (yes, he is already good enough)

Sezemsky - Holzer
J.Müller - Seider
Abeltshauser - Y.Seidenberg
Akdag - Gawanke/M.Müller/Mebus
(Kälble might also be an option)

Grubauer
Greiss
Niederberger

Once you get beyond the few star players there are another 10-20 players at a similar level of the ones listed here and they are basically interchangeable depending on the coaches preferences.

Very strong team. If someone injured you can add Kotkaniemi,Armia or Lehkonen easily.

Team USA is at their best in an era with no best-on-best national tournament. Absolutely nuts.

Pesce is underrated again. He was better last year than all but Carlson using Evolving-hockey WAR—he is the #1 USA d-man for 16-17 through 18-19.

Using Hockey-Reference Point Share he was only behind Carlson and McDonagh last season.

All this while playing more than half the season on the left side.

All the players listed in this and other USA rosters are excellent D-men with strong reputations. Pesce is just as good but doesn't have the reputation—yet.

Here's my current U.S. team (more the names rather than actual lines/pairs they would play on):

Goaltenders (x3):

John Gibson
Ben Bishop
Connor Hellebucyk

Defensemen (x8)

Ryan Suter-John Carlson
Charlie McAvoy-Jacob Trouba
Jaccob Slavin-Brett Pesce
Seth Jones-Zach Werenski

Forwards (x12):

Matthew Tkachuk-Jack Eichel-Patrick Kane
Johnny Gaudreau-Auston Matthews-Cam Atkinson
Kyle Connor-Dylan Larkin-Blake Wheeler
Brady Tkachuk-Vince Trocheck-Alex DeBrincat

To have 4 good lines, yes. With play-styles i think would go well together.

This would probably work well agains most teams, but if you wanna beat Canada I think a super 1th line would be better beacuse then you have at least one line that could match any of the lines that canada can bring out.

Then you can only pray that this line have some huge chemestry and somehow dominates.

The rest of the players should simply focus on skating as fast as humanly possible to draw some penelties. A hot goalie would also help. So just go with current form rather than reputation. Then I think you will have a chance although small.

Goes for all teams except Canada.

He can swap with Trouba then.

Canada has been done a bunch, so I'll do Czech Republic:

Palat-Krejci-Pastrnak
Kubalik-Hertl-Voracek
Vrana-Necas-Kase
Nosek-Faksa-Frolik
Sobotka

Kempny-Gudas
Simek-Hronek
Hajek-Rutta
Polak

Rittich
Mrazek
Francouz
This is technically very close. I say technically because Czechs love to not bring NHL players in favour of Euro players. So I'd expect Milan gulas in there somewhere. Probably in top 6 as well. A goalie to be from Europe and at least 1 D as well. Note that I hate this strategy but it happens every time. I think they'd find room for kovar and Jaskin as well.

We are obviously not on par with the big 5 but this is the best our goaltending has looked in years. Our centre depth is also stronger than usual with Hertl, Krejci, faksa and I'd out nosek in there. Let Necas fly on the wing.

The D is the big weakness and I'd expect Hronek to play about 25 minutes a night. Polak is retired from national team unfortunately. If I'm being honest I can't even think of who our 7th d would be as we don't have another one on the NHL and I don't think we have one making major waves in Europe either. Probably jerabek/nakladal... Someone like that. My choice would be Masin or Zboril but czechs tend to not like ahl players.

Ftr... I'd love to watch the Czech team you made here. I think that team could win most world championships. But not a best on best.

Would like Simon somewhere as well.
