May as well at this point. Once Burke was mistakenly canned by the Corporate influence, you knew things would only get worse.

I know this may not be popular, but I would start with Phil. The return should be decent moving forward and teams like Florida, Nashville, Colorado, Buffalo...(maybe Calgary?) could have interest and have assets we could use.

Next, Leafs have to decide who they are going to continue to build around on D. If it is Phaneuf, then Gardiner goes imo. If it is youth in Gardiner and Rielly, then Phanuef goes as I don't see him as a fit with either.

Bottom 6 is fine, but we need a more two-way, physical top six to go with the Bozaks, Kadri's, (Nylander,) JVR's up front. I don't think this team can build around Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly on the backend either. A more physical team should also up the physicality of the above mentioned up front. Each player individually may not be bad on this team, but as a group, they are not compatible. I never thought they were and still don't think they are.

We are on the same page here.Address the lack of character in the room and on the bench. My thoughts on this are in the Kessel thread. If theres a deal that nets some leadership and offence, Id go there.

For me the real question is:

Does this lineup play Shannahan hockey?

Answer: Not even close.

Result: Burn.It.Down.

But not until the off season.

Why this?

I would imagine teams have the cap space in the summer to make moves. Moves involving core players don't usually happen in season. Also teams know exactly where they are in terms of draft position.
If Shanahan is taking the year to evaluate, this also makes sense. He wants to see the full 82 games.

Expect things to get worse.

This team is fun to watch, but its players are massively flawed. Some players will not be able to sustain their play, and with the help of sample size will show their real value.

When the playoff push comes, I surmise this team, as I have said all along is a bubble team will be exposed.

We are still probably too good to be in the Mcdavid or Eichel sweepstakes, but we are also not good enough to ensure a playoff spot. Columbus, Philly, Ottawa, maybe even NJ are behind us, but for how long? We will see.

Shanahan evaluating. Rinse and repeat.

I thought this team was going to tighten up defensively when the times get tough. :sarcasm: At least that is what some guys, not naming names, said would happen.

But the flaw is WILL, not skill.

Commitment to defense, and playing a game that gives the opposition nightmares is something that begins with your heart not your hands.
