i've actually been waiting for weber to establish himself as a wisniewski or MAB-type PP specialist/bottom pair guy. watching him recently, he might actually have gotten there.

I don't think Edler should be on the 1st unit anymore when you can put Vrbata and Weber there. Eventually with Kassian that gives them 3 righties who can all be good threats to shoot off passes from the Sedins. Could be good.

I think Weber's better at getting his shot through too compared to #23. His PP ability just seems like a better fit there on top of that.

The 1st unit got its boost when it went to 3f/2d, it make little sense to practically go back to what wasn't working with just a different piece in its place. I'm not sure on the scoring last night but Edler was riding a 3 game PP point steak which is Weber started up.

i'm all for replacing edler on the first unit. but i think three RHS with the sedins would just mean that no opposing PK will ever defend the right half of the zone ever again.

He's pretty much played his way onto the roster on a full time basis. Sucks for corrado and stanton but weber has been good lately.

Weber has been quite effective. Moves the puck quickly and with authority and isn't as much of a defensive liability as he may have been in the past. He also has a decent shot.

Wasn't the old setup the one that wasn't working? i.e Vrbata + Edler on the points. I just remember noticing they looked better with Weber there (and Kassian up front too I might add), but I haven't looked up the numbers for it.

Yep. With the Sedins looking to pass out there you need RH shooting threats to keep PK's honest.

Just saw a stat posted by tc23 too that said Weber has been our most efficient PP producer among D-men this season. All the more reason to keep him there now going forward.

Edler is fine on the 1st PP. The addition of Weber really helps him out back there because with how we were setup, Edler was basically on an island by himself a lot with no safety valve when the play broke down.

The way the PP worked was that everything ran through the Sedins, namely Hank, and Edler would really only get to do something when it was at the end of a play or when all the lanes were too clogged for the Sedins' passing plays and he basically had to shoot when the opposition was already set in their defense, that's what leads to blocked shots.

It was just too static when it was ran all through Henrik on the half-wall. Now that Weber is there, we're seeing much stronger movement along the blue-line which forces the forwards covering the point to move, which opens the lane much more. No surprise that Edler and Weber have been en fuego lately.

I'd say don't mess with a good thing.

weber is the canucks "secret weapon on the powerplay. the opposition now has to either respect his shot or vrbatas. the sedins have room to move around and find the open shooter.

Don't forget Edler's shot. The Sedins have 3 guys to work with who can really shoot the puck. The biggest weakness in this formation is they don't have someone standing in front of the net creating havoc.

you know, it struck me last week watching matthias do nothing: why can't matthias stand in front of the net on the second unit? he doesn't need any hands; he just needs to stand there, screen the goalie, and draw a defender.

it's not like higgins (last night's tip notwithstanding) or burrows are irreplaceable on that unit or anything.

It could be worth a shot. Higgins' goal yesterday was like only the 2nd goal that unit has scored all year or something ridiculous IIRC.

Has Weber basically become what we're hoping Clendening will be a few years down the road?

Weber has the Salo-esque threat in a rocket from the point
If he can develop the prowess on when to use a nice wrister like Salo did, then that'd be huge

The main point for me in Clendening is his passing, which is top notch
Not too sure about his shot

I actually like how things turned out. Weber earned that last spot on the blueline and Corrado and Clendening get to go down to Utica and play big minutes (together they form the Comets first pairing now).

Probably the best situation for everyone involved.

One of the most infuriating things about Desjardins' coaching is how consistently terrible the 2nd unit PP has been and how little has been done to address it. Higgins and Hamhuis have been mainstays on it despite being TERRIBLE both by the eye test and #fancystats (shots generated/60). That goal Hamhuis scored the other day was, I believe, the 2nd unit's 3rd goal all season.

I like that Weber has come in ans earned a significant role, but I'd hardly call it an ideal situation for Clendening to be back in the AHL.

I still feel Corrado is ready for a full time role beside Hamhuis and Weber should be dealt at the draft to recoup some of the acquisition costs for Clendening and Pedan. Happy with Weber and he's fitting in nice on the 1st unit PP, but bring Weber back and there's 5 RS dmen for next year. I believe Corrado can be sent to Utica still next year but he looked ready for full time duty during his last stint.

Something has to give. Maybe they decide to keep Weber over Clendening. Or maybe they convince Bieksa to waive. But I'd be surprised if they bring all 5 of Tanev, Bieksa, Corrado, Weber and Clendening to camp next year. Weber's strong play could maybe land a 3rd at the draft...have to strongly consider it if it's on the table.

Just because he's big, doesn't mean he's a good net front presence. I think even Burrows is superior in that role

Corrado is capable of switching over the left so there's that, but I doubt the coaches will want to actually go that route.

Has Weber basically become what we're hoping Clendening will be a few years down the road?

Possibly. If Clendenning turns out to be a guy who can fill in on the 2nd pair for stretches reasonably well I'd be happy with him. And that's what Weber is right now.

I doubt any team is all that terrified of Edler's weak wrister from the boards.

His wrister is actually very good hence why he seemed to have some success on shootouts. His slapper is also arguably on par with Weber as well. Edler's problem is his difficulty in getting them through which was hindered even more by the single d-man setup.

Now that Weber is there to play catch with Hank on the right-side, it frees Edler up to be much more of a roamer, something he is very good at.

Weber being a safety valve also helps to stretch the opposing forwards out, creating lanes for the both of them to shoot through.

His run lately has shown that he is more of a sure thing than Clendenning or Corrado right now and I think you'd have to think twice about letting Weber go.
