Guys can you just stop already with your "Weber should have been traded for a pick!".

What do you think??? Bergevin tried, nobody wanted Weber. He's gone now. Get over it.

We will never know for sure... However, last year and the start of this season, there always been a consensus that Weber was worth approximately 3rd pick. Weber clearly has some potential left in him and with the excellent season he had in the Swiss league, it is hard to believe that he wasn't worth at least 6th or a 7th pick.

I think that Bergevin didn't really tried to trade him, simply because he loves to have depth at the D position. Like he always said: "On a jamais trop de profondeur à la defense"

Weber just had an injury had at a bad timing, this is why I believe, especially in a shorter season, he didn't played much.

He is a decent D and will find a spot somewhere else. Like some said earlier, Diaz simply steal is spot.

Good luck, le jeune Veber

By what, an armchair GM on this board. I think most people are realistic about the situation, that other organizations have players within their system better than Weber, and so would never trade assets to get him.

"Tuesday was also the deadline for teams to extend qualifying offers to their restricted free agents. Ryan White, Gabriel Dumont and goaltenders Dustin Tokarski and Robert Mayer were all qualified by the Canadiens, while defenceman Yannick Weber, who was a healthy scratch most of last season, was not and becomes an unrestricted free agent. Bergevin tried to trade Weber, but there were no takers and he’s giving the 24-year-old a chance to revive his career elsewhere"

Thinking Bergevin didn't at least try to trade Weber is selling him short.

Also, a HFboards consensus can be far from reality as shown in most trades.

It is not hard to believe that he wasn't worth at least a 6th or 7th. Since he didn't get trade, it's actually hard to believe Weber's worth anything.

Really have a hard time thinking he wasn't worth a 5th round draft pick but then, we have to think that Bergevin did indeed ask everybody if they weren't interested. And if not now...well we wasted him much before that. This insane stupidity of making him play forward and then D, and then not...that's enough to screw somebody up. Hoping he gets his career back on track. Not that I think he'll be the next Robidas....but he might have something decent the day he gets enough confidence with his new team. There has to be somewhere a Maxwell for Dawes type of trade and I do have a hard time believing there wasn't one with Weber at some point. I mean, Weber for Deschamps. Weber for anybody underachieving borderline AHL/NHL in need of a new start or filling a need with his new team. But hey, they know more than I do.

Reading a lot of comments about Weber the last few years got me thinking that it's never Weber's fault.

It's always everybody's fault. Yet, players thrives in confidence and people underestimate that. Some people have a short memory 'cause when we used him in the 2010-2011 playoffs, most people were now counting Weber in. We're really pleased with his showing and it was probably the first time when we showed confidence in him and strangely....it kinda worked. Only 3 games you'll say...you are right. And then he didn't have a great preseason that's for sure. And it went downhill. But reality tells me that the treatment he got....not many other players got it. Who in the league was used the same way he was? Which young D is continuously moved from Stands, to D to forward? How can you get your **** together? He was put in a tough situation and frankly, we might never know what he would amount to 'cause the damage might be permanent. But honestly, he also might not have been THE greatest prospect to begin with. His fault as far as his work ethic? Not sure we can know that. His fault as far as just not being that good to begin with....probably. Will we know know with a new start? It's now or never.

I agree with almost everything you said except this part.

There's really no need for drama. Let's just say that Weber maybe had it harder than other prospects in this pool because of the jam on defense. He couldn't work a way out in this depth and most coaches wouldn't use him on the blueline.

Some people with CH goggles on really overrating Weber. He is just a very marginal NHL player and not the type of guy most teams look for on bottom pairing. They want gritty dmen who are sound defensively and can handle 6'4 beast forwards and be a warrior in the playoffs. Not soft players who suck on boards in crease and prone to mental lapses. Teams don't care much about offensive "upside" from 6-7 dmen.

Weber will do fine in Europe but he is not cut out to be a bottom pairing guy in the NHL, and he's not good enough to be in a top 4.

That's pretty much the bottom line, and the reason for his lack of value. It's not so much a "skill"-based assessment as it is reality. Great to have on your pond hockey (or European) team, bad to have him on your NHL hockey team.

this.

And bollocks to those who said he wasn't given a chance, he had plenty of them. He's just not good enough

I can't believe that Weber is not even worth a 6th or 7th pick. I hate that we simply lose Weber, and get absolutely nothing back.

What drama? Am I inventing something? Who in the league went from stands to forward to d-man to stands and so on the way he did? I think the only guy I think of was Christoph Schubert in Ottawa and yet during his stint with Ottawa....he didn't sit in the stands THAT much, at least not compared to Weber. And the jam on defense is funny as you'd think that we'd have an all-star D lineup for so many years and we actually never did. In the end, true, Weber also wasn't probably good enough. If so, they should have recognized it and try to send him somewhere to get something. Though right now, it's more a favor to him than anything else. Time to move on, and let,s hope it pans out for him.

You do wonder how Marc-André Bergeron had a job for such a long time.....Weber could be used, if he could gained that confidence back, as a #6 and PP specialist. Teams will always find a use for a guy with a big shot from the point. See Torey Krug....though I do think Krug is better defensively than Weber.

Shame to see him go for nothing. He definitely had tools he just never got to be used properly and his development stalled.

I'm sure teams will be interested, but at less than the 1 mil he had for a QO.

Bye Bye Yannick. I kinda liked you sometimes, other times I wished you would just retire early.

Best of luck as a free agent.

The Habs already have some great PP dmen. They don't need to keep a 2nd rate PP "specialist" on the roster.

Bergeron BTW has a MUCH better shot than Weber, one of best in league. At Weber's age of 24 Bergeron was already putting up big #s in the NHL, to the point that the Oilers couldn't ditch him even though he was awful defensively. Bergeron forced teams to keep him due to his stats, Weber has nothing to show for his NHL time so far but hfboards style "potential".

Was in response to your post where I didn't see you making the difference between elite softy and not elite ones. Weber also has a great shot, just that we didn't see it enough. I do know that I saw both on their respective camp, and while Bergeron was harder, the difference wasn't THAT big. Bergeron was more precise though Weber made some progression. But Bergeron was already seem as a tremendous liability before he jumped in the NHL. They just thought he was worth it. But there will always be teams who will make a call to a potential if they think he deserves a 2nd chance. We have to be pretty sure that he will get the call.

When does he tried to trade Weber? I'm a not surprise that he is worth nothing now, his value is at it lowest. However, that doesn't mean that Weber was worth nothing 1 year ago. You are proving nothing with that quote...

Was not a fan of Weber and didn't want to see him on the Habs, but would not of minded him in Hamilton as he would have been a great help to their PP woes.

If he is not a NHLer anymore, I think Weber prefer playing in the Swiss league than the AHL.
