“It's really kind of obvious,” he said. “Sometimes you can predict what the players are going to do: He just skates forward, and (the fastest guys) are going to be in the league. In the old days, it was just skill. You didn't know where the puck was going to come from or where it was going to go, but these days, it's easy to predict what's going to happen.”

If we were .500 the masses would be begging for MB to give Kovy a shot. Amazing how cocky a winning record can turn the old faithful so sour, so fast. I'm not suggesting he would be a fit either, but destroying a former player, and simple suggestion, just because someone suggested a low risk tryout.... is pathetic.

As pointed out a few times, there are risks involved with it, and very little upside.

The idea was not destroyed because it was a simple suggestion, it was destroyed due to the numerous points made, and the logic behind them.

He is not what we need at all. And it's quite obvious when the majority of the fan base vehemently opposes him coming over, that most fans have finally moved on.

It's not "pathetic", it's called "reality". It's not a matter of being cocky, it's a matter of looking at our roster and realizing that Kovalev really can't help us at all. People are understandably getting frustrated with his name being thrown around ad nauseam, as some sort of Messiah. The strongest argument I have seen is that he wants to retire in Montreal, which is nice, but irrelevant to the needs of the team.

What does that have to do with all the points made about Kovalev being useless to the team? That's a fairly irrelevant "point".

There is yet to be 1 legitimate argument for him joining the team.

If at some point our PP is in desperate straits, we have plenty of options already with the team to try before bringing in a specialist who can no longer keep his head above water at even strength. No to AK27.

Helllz no. Loved Kovy when here, but if people complain about floating THEN, man...

As for the PP, he's obviously got ONE role. The shot from the Markov cross ice pass. He can't cycle around the ice to get to that point these days. I realize he has had some early success with Fla, but I prefer jsut making sure we bury our chances. Our PP is fine except for the lack of Diaz (who would have thought?!).

Anyone honestly think Kovy would be ok with being played on the 4th line. Also, it would make our 4th line useless. Currently, it's very useful. MT was deploying it a lot last game.

Kovy in 2008/09 was 50% IN SHOOTOUTS....with Habs

8 shots 4 goals...

2006 /07 he was 44% in shootouts...
9 shots 4 goals

I would send in Kovy before many current Habs ...
for example Max Pacioretty was 2 for 13 in shootouts last yr....15%

Now if Habs miss playoffs buy a point or 2, a few shootout losses matter...

Again, for Power play and shootouts, there is no risk....

Yay, I dont get the Kovy bashing, you dont like him but why insult him? It would be cool if he could retire as a Habs, the team is doing good but you never know with injuries he would be the first I would call, few remaining games where he will give his best in front of the best fans in the league before retiring

I would take Koivu today ahead of Kovy. I just think he's declined too far. I'm in no way bashing Kovy. He would definitely kick it up if he came back to MTL, he loves it here, but playing 4th line minutes, I don't think he'd be too excited about playing that role. He wants to be the hero, not the SO specialist.

Thing is, imagine what it would take to get Koivu out of Ana! We can't afford Saku, he's too valuable!!

And again, we need our 4th line, so he'd have to be an injury situation insertion in which case I don't think he could handle our very intense system.

I've always been a great admirer of Kovalev but he's no longer capable of turning a team into a winner. A vignette now and them on the PP isn't enough to justify signing him.

haha. why is this even a thread.

we need players with heart - not players who need to dangle with the puck 4342365 times before they enter the offensive zone.

anyway, we got Ryder for the PP. what we need the most right now is someone to help Prust policing the opposition and a big dman to clear the front of the net.

Habaneros, first of all--good thread! I'm not sure why a lot of posters dump on this thread topic. Maybe they're too busy discovering a cure for cancer to have time for such frivolities. Personally, I'm not quite so busy.

As for Kovalev, my initial reaction was similar to many of the posts above. He's done. Past his due date. Not a team first guy. What I don't buy--either then or now--is that Kovy is a bad team mate, a cancer in the locker room. He has always struck me as an articulate, sincere intelligent interview. Humble, available, gives back to the community.

And lest it go unstated, Kovalev was probably the single most talented and entertaining player to don a Habs' jersey since Guy Lafleur. I guess an argument can be made for Mats Naslund, maybe Saku. But in terms of jaw-dropping, I-can't-believe-my-eyes talent, Kovalev stands alone.

He also scored some very big goals for us. And carried the team on his back in a era when nobody else was stepping up to shoulder some of the load.

Too add a player of his stature at a minimum salary for a thirty game period to help out on the PP and shoot-outs and to be available when injuries start to accumulate is not that stupid. Who knows, he can even be Galchenyuk's personal stick-handling coach. (I can't think of too many other people on the face of the earth who can offer tips to the kid in this regard.)

The much talked about depth that is suddenly the Habs' strong suit is paper thin at the forward position. Beyond the still injured and not so inspiring Petteri Nokelainen, we have Yannick Weber as a fill-in. That's right, the hard-suffering defenceman who's amassed about 15 seconds of ice time this season. I do like Gabriel Dumont but at this point in his career, I'm not sure he's the guy to keep around for spot duty on the big club. And he's the high-water mark on the Bulldogs--there's not much else worth talking about. Maybe next year.

Which brings us back to Kovalev. Nobody is asking him to be a top 6 forward. Maybe he'll be in the press box more nights than not. But for chump change, and for the two months that are left in the season, it's certainly worth considering.

Whaaa?

What does that have to do with Kovalev? Therrien isn't a 40 year old player that can no longer hold a roster spot in the NHL. Plus, no one has made a legitimate argument to bring him back, and no shootouts are not a legitimate argument. This isn't a video game where you would bring in 1 player just for shootouts.

How you enjoying Boullion's play....many here said he was done...useless,upset Habs signed him.

He's useful for the team right now. Kovalev would not be. He's a liability on the ice. He's not good enough for a bottom feeder like Florida.
KOVY useless now..ya ya ..ok ... any chance the know it all judgmental posters, could be wrong?

No, I assume the other NHL clubs that deemed him useless, including his current one are right.

A few random posters (very small minority) that can't bring 1 solid argument to the table are most likely wrong.

It is not 2008.

It is 2013. Florida brought him in primarily to help in the shootouts as well, and well...we all know how that went.

Plus he hasn't been producing on the PP, and we are 11th, so we don't need help there.

There's no point in bringing him in, except perhaps for nostalgic reasons, but those reasons are not based in reality.

Kovalev can't even hold a candle to Michael Ryder now. His decline was indeed precipitous. His production is under .5 PPG. There are other, better players worth coveting. Hell, I'd even get a crappy enforcer
