Today, IGN First officially announces that the game 2K hinted at is in fact Firaxis Games’ XCOM 2, a full sequel to 2012’s critically acclaimed XCOM: Enemy Unknown and a continuation of the now 20-year-old legendary turn-based tactical squad combat series, which will be available exclusively on PC this November. Watch the debut trailer above for a glimpse into a future where the aliens are in control of the Earth, and XCOM has gone underground to fight to overthrow their Advent government. This new guerrilla force will face more powerful enemies in unpredictable combat scenarios as they fight to turn the tables on a technologically superior enemy.

Over the next month IGN will reveal huge details about XCOM 2, uncovered during our visit to Firaxis’ Maryland studio. Tomorrow you’ll get an in-depth overview and interview with Creative Director Jake Solomon that’ll highlight the major new features, including new soldier classes, new aliens, stealth-infused tactics, procedurally generated maps, and more. Following that, we’ll have a Rewind Theater examination of all the details in today’s trailer reveal with Solomon and Lead Producer Garth DeAngelis.

And, later this week we’ll go in-depth with Solomon and DeAngelis on the reasons behind the bold move to take XCOM from a multiplatform series to a PC exclusive, and how XCOM 2 will be tailored to take advantage of that single platform’s strengths – followed by Firaxis’ exciting plans to support modders and their work.

Sweet.
edit: I like the concept of it being a resistance this time.
Really curious why it's going PC exclusive, but I can only see that as a good thing.

Hell yea! Loved the first one. There was some annoyances with the RPG aspect with the first one that I didnt like but im sure they will improve on all that this time around. Gameplay was fantastic last time.

Will be a 1st day purchase.

Hoping for an official endless war mode. And larger squads/ops.

The XCOM website has been updated and has some other small details:
  • The mobile base is called "The Avenger" and is a converted alien ship.
  • There are five classes now — I'm guessing "Ranger" is the new one. They mention "Momentum" as a new class ability.
  • "The state of the world affects each combat mission's environment."
  • "Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols."
  • "Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts."
  • You can save fallen soldiers by carrying them to the extraction.
  • "There are virtually infinite combinations of map, missions and goals."
  • Also confirms head-to-head multiplayer on generated maps.

Maps are procedurally generated.

This will be a must-buy for me on day one. Loved the first game by microprose, loved the new one by Firaxis, and this looks to be potentially be the best one yet. I can't wait. I'm hoping it's early November

Always skeptical when a game is announced 5 months before its release date but with a game like XCom there isn't a ton of developmental time.

Wouldn't surprise me if this feels more like an expansion pack to Enemy Unknown than a legit sequel. Would fall in line with what 2K and Firaxis have been doing the past few years with their half assed standalone games which play more like expansions or even DLC than true games.

Sucks that it wont be coming out on PS3/Xbox 360, my laptop can't handle it.

It's kind of funny that the original had this in 1994 and it's taken this long for the feature to return. Everything old is new again.

I hear you, but remember that Enemy Unknown was announced in February 2012 and came out that October. Firaxis seems to just like to keep tight lids on games until they're ready to announce a release date and sure that they'll hit it. They do the same thing with the Civilization series.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Enemy Unknown has already received its expansion pack (a big one), and I want to say that it was standalone. They could've been cheap and called that XCOM 2, but they didn't.

All said, Firaxis is one of the few developers that I really trust. Whether it's a sequel, expansion pack, DLC or spin-off, they're good about making clear what it is and how much content you're getting. If they're calling this XCOM 2, then I wholly trust that it's a true sequel.

Right and I wouldn't be surprised if XCOM2 feels similar to that. But in a way I think it's hard to avoid that feeling with these types of games. They're not really graphics or engine driven and the leap from XCOM to XCOM2 isn't going to be as big as CIV IV to CIV V was. Will likely just be new units, new perks and skills, and a new base system.

Digging the stealth-lite approach. I hope there's an official version of Long War or something close to it. The mod is great but it's not exactly balanced.

In AngryJoe's interview with the XCOM guys, they said a certain amount of that was just for the demo and wouldn't necessarily make it to the game or be in every mission.
