the only reason why they could do the 1 year AHL contract is because of him being an overager as it meant they have 2 years to sign him to an NHL contract and signing non overagers to 1 year AHL deals wouldn't make any sense since they wouldn't be eligible to play in the AHL until their CHL season is over.
