By the end of this contract, at worst, guy will be a slightly overpaid 4th liner. By the time the 4th year rolls around the cap will probably be atleast 84 million. Solid deal. Our third line is locked up for the next 4 years or so. Weird concept to even think about.

Panik is an inconsistent power forward with a really good shot and plenty of talent. Twenty to thirty games a year you’ll love him, twenty to thirty games you’ll like him and twenty games he’ll be invisible.

Caps fans he’s more good than bad.

A lot like Burakovsky by the sound of it. Except the middle part for Bura of twenty where ”you’ll like him” just goes directly for the invisible charter.

Have to admit I havent seen Panik all that much and seeing 4 years of term isnt overly exciting. But compared to Bura he plays the more needed position (rw) and for cheaper price.

So ill take it.

This is a really good contract for Washington. Again. God damn it.

LOL at all the people saying 2.5 is too high for him. Panik
  • Scores at a 2nd line rate at even strength
  • Played 2nd line ice time last season
  • Has consistently driven possession.
This is a steal.

Even if its a year too long, who cares. It free agency! A UFA contract just 1 year too long is the dream scenario.

The numbers low enough that its almost meaningless. Almost half of it can be buried in the AHL or traded away or bought out fairly easily.

Washington has a short contention window anyway. I imagine once OV starts slowing down, the Caps will be dismantled for a rebuild anyway. Who cares about the cap space in 4 years when youre trying to win now.

He's frustrating player. Looks like first liner for one game and then disappears for the next 5 games. Also looks disinterested and lazy most of the time.

Good player if you are planning to play him in the bottom-6. He had way too big role in Coyotes when given top-6 minutes and pp time

So basically our Burakovsky replacement then, no biggie.

For less $

Thanks to the posters offering thorough assessments of Panik's play while he was on their respective home teams. We appreciate it. It sounds like he's decent (if streaky) middle-six guy with a good set of tools who is best suited, and most likely to meet all reasonable expectations, playing on the third line--which is exactly where Caps management plans to put him. He is straight-up our replacement for Connolly, our 3RW who was on a decent contract and had a great year in his contract year and priced himself out of D.C. If one of our top-six RWs get injured, Panik could possibly step up for a bit, but likely with less satisfying results. (Connolly did the same thing.)

As long as chemistry with Eller/Hags develops, it sounds like Caps fans will be relatively happy with this acquisition.

As far as that fourth year: Like several Caps fans with knowledge of BMac's signing strategy have stated, he has a penchant for low-AAV, extra-year contracts. You can essentially view this as a three-year contract with an option year (in which he gets traded if the Caps don't want him for that fourth year).
