Your point? Do Ranger fans have some sort of exclusive claim over NYC? It's weird cause when I go over the bridge and pay the toll.. they don't ask me if I'm a Devils fan.

End of the day, NJ still has some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country. NYC is still there whether you are a Ranger or a Devil so it's pretty irrelevant here as to why those neighborhoods exist. No **** it's because of NYC to a large extent.

It's funny because most ranger fans live in Podunk, Long Island or have moved to NYC from some forsaken place in the midwest while Devils fans are typically born and bred in NJ, usually northern or central NJ, both among the wealthiest parts of the country.

I think there was more strategy to this trade from WSH's perspective than a lot of people want to believe.

Sending him to the Rangers or Lightning, for instance, hurts them even more.. they are in direct competition with those teams in the short-term. The Devils aren't an issue short-term, dealing with them was far safer.

No one is beating Pittsburgh in the short term (unless CBJ gets hella lucky) so it is a moot point.

Note that not all Caps fans share this opinion. Mojo cut down on his number of drop passes dramatically the last few seasons and is decent on the boards. He has also been the Caps best net front presence the last couple years. His two goals in Game 6 vs. Toronto were not complete anomalies. I wouldn't say that he drives play, but I wouldn't call him a complete passenger either.

he would then also be exactly why they lose in the playoffs. if your softest player who really isnt that big is your "best net front presence" guy the team is screwed.

was never really a fan of him but believe he played well last season and also saw some other posters points about his value on the power play. if he is able to hang on the 2nd or 3rd line in jersey the fans will be ok with him. if he ends up on the first line he will quickly be the fans whipping boy.

the Devils have Taylor Hall as their 1st line LW. MarJo won't be used there.

Well then he wouldn't be the reason they lose. It's not his fault the organization didn't bring in the players with the willingness to go to the net or instill it in any of the other forwards they did have.

A 2nd and a 3rd is not cheap for him. It is pretty much exactly his worth. He was a top6 player in Washington, but at the bottom of the top 6.

2nd and 3rd is not exactly the worth of a legit top 6 player, especially on a stacked Washington team. That's just BS. 50 point players go for way more than that.

A second round pick has a 25% chance of having any sort of meaningful career. The Devils absolutely fleeced them

It seems like Jersey won this trade by quite a bit.

Maybe Washington justifies it by thinking that the second round pick will actually just be a late first round as the Devils are one of the three worst teams in the league?

He is only a 50pt player in Washington and it is going to be exposed soon. He is a 40pt player and I am being a bit generous. Of course on a line with MacDavid he might be a 60 or a 70, but MacDavid is not on his current team.

Stacked WSH is another narrative. They are exactly a modern cap team. Ovechkin, Backstrom, gap, Kuznetsov, gap, Oshie, gap, gap, everybody else.

A better question is if one can get the worth of that player with a 2nd and a 3rd. And the answer is yes, if you are any good at drafting.

This a pretty straight forward trade. Roster player for picks. Now for future. To know exactly how it works out for WSH we will have to wait at least 5-7 years, but that's the nature of such a trade.

Here is some from the Marcus Johansson draft year for you.

Washington pick in the2nd : Orlov
Washington pick in the 3rd: Eakin

I would easily trade for them for Johansson now.

So you just assume as a GM that your organization sucks at scouting, drafting and developing players and enter that negotiation? That's not how it works.

But again may I disappoint you the 2 rd is floridas and the 3 rd are torontos so its probably around middle of each round

.....except the 2nd round pick is Florida's and the 3rd is Toronto's, so where NJ finishes has no bearing on anything.

Nice subtle attempt, though!

Even if hes a 40 point player for the rest of his career, the trade is 100000% a steal.

You go based on percentages. What are the odds that EITHER the 2nd or 3rd round pick ever becomes anywhere near as good of a player as Johansson? They aren't very good.

Ok, that's understandable. How about some other sets of Washington 2nd's and 3rd's? Would you trade him for:

2000 - Matt Pettinger and Sergei Kliazmine?
2001 - Nathan Paetsch and Owen Fussey?
2004 - Mikhail Yunkov and Sami Lepisto?
2005 - Tom Fritsche and Perttu Lindgren?
2007 - Theo Ruth and Phil DeSimone?
2008 - Eric Mestery and Jacob DeSerres?

Everyone knows this was a pure cap dump and Washington's hands were tied. If you want to pretend they got market value for MoJo, that's fine, but you're only fooling yourself.

This was a brilliant use of resources, using picks acquired from other moves and basically upgrading from Cammy to a very useful mid 20's forward in Johansson.

No haven't you heard? Shero is the dumbest GM in hockey because he didn't take a late round pick for Kovy's rights

So it's a steal if the 2nd turns out to be a 40pt scorer and the 3rd a 3rd pairing D-man? The odds for that aren't bad.

And what is with those useless odds and percentages? They are based on the scoutng and management performances average. If you are average in the league, maybe you should look for another job.

The odds for one of those happening is low, let alone both. Most draft picks for any team beyond the first round never amount to much.

You honestly think the odds "aren't bad" that a second and third round pick not only become NHL players in any capacity, but consistently contribute too?

The odds for that are indeed quite bad. You're lucky to get one NHL career player out of those 2 picks combined, and there's no presumption of quality in that statement.

And the Capitals have been a below-average team when it comes to finding talent outside of the 1st round in the NHL draft. They're really good at picking out talent in the 1st (especially consider they've been a late 1st round drafting team for the past decade), but their record drops off faster than most outside of the 1st round. That Cody Eakin pick you mentioned earlier is literally the first Capitals 3rd round selection since Steve Konowalchuk in 1991 to become a career NHLer. Their second round has been marginally better with Orlov and Neuvirth (and Bowey as a somewhat promising prospect), but even still there's a huge gap between Matt Pettinger in 2000 and Neuvirth in 2006 where they got nothing from their 2nd round picks. For the 2001-2010 decade, the Caps hit on only 16.67% (2/12) 2nd round picks and 12.5% (1/8) of their 3rd round picks. Both of those numbers are well beneath the averages across the league.
