At $1.2M? Thats certainly not a bad cap hit. That salary can be buried in the minors with no problem.

They prefer to keep worthless POS's like Mantha due to incompetent coaches and leadership. Meanwhile the Caps are pretending that Backstrom is the best he has ever been, when in reality if you watch he can not keep up with play.

For a huge NHL bust who was drafted 13 years ago, it astonishes me that McIlrath is still hanging around. That's pretty crazy. I guess Duncan Siemens wasn't as fortunate.

Caps also aren't down to 21 players yet, despite what CapFriendly says. McMichael, Miroshnichenko, Johansen, and Haman Aktell are all still in camp. Snively was waived today, and will be in Hershey once he clears.

NAK has actually looked like a competent NHLer even after winning with the Avs. Certainly looked solid enough this preseason. Would be good on most 4th lines out there with the hustle and half decent hands/shot he has.

- Edmundson and Pacioretty are out for a few months and will be LTIR'ed.
- Snively and Aube-Kubel are still listed on the active roster, but were outplayed in camp by younger players. Hence their placement on waivers today for the purposes of demotion to Hershey, should they clear.
- Alexeev is penciled in there for the roster, but might have been beat by Hardy Haman-Aktell.
- Miroshnichenko and Phillips are still contending for a roster spot.

Aube-Kubel is a weird one. He seems to be really caught in the fringes. Most times i've watched him, he seems like a pretty decent 4th line energy forward. Just seems to have difficulty ever really sticking in that role with anyone long-term. Cap hit being more than minimum probably hurts him pretty badly this year especially. Not too many competitive teams that can afford to spend any more than the absolute minimum on that role, if that even. Some teams even staring down the barrel of a skeleton roster to make the cap work. Bad teams that would have the cap space probably just want to let their younger guys play and see what they have.
Too bad for him. Always a little unfortunate when a guy can play at this level, but peripheral, accounting circumstances force them out.

Matt Irwin is a legit talent
NAK is a fringe guy in my observations in Washington. He's got wheels and makes smart defensive plays but unfortunately he has hands of stone and takes way too many bad minor penalties. He's also not physical enough to really push the needle in his favor. For a team like Washington who's trying to infuse some young talent with the retirement home core he just doesn't fit when there's younger physical guys banging the door down coming off a calder cup championship.
