Smart. He made a bet on himself.

Sacrificed term for money. He was looking at around 10M for 3 years. Ended up with 8.2 over 2. A one year deal was too risky.

If he does well after this season, Winnipeg will be under the gun to get him re-signed long-term.

If you expect him to be a starter then it's not really that pricey. It's only the 24th highest goalie salary in the league for a player that put up .918/2.47 stats over 230+ games in Philadelphia.

Compared to Kulikov it's a bargain.

Mase had some real good seasons here, before it went off the rails in the first four months of 16-17. Hope he does well for the Jets, and his dog doesn't get too cold.

He's still a good goalie. Before last season he was even great for a few seasons. Good caphit for such a short contract.

I think Helle will still be given every opportunity to be starter, but likely a 60/40 split to whoever plays the best.

We have the cap space so I am not too concerned, Mason is a hell of an upgrade over Hutch/Pavelec and even Hellebuyck.

Not sure why people are complaining about the money. It's pretty fair considering he was a FA signing for only two years. Would I have liked to sign him for 600k less? Sure, but you hardly ever find the perfect deal during free agency.

This signing finally makes the Jets contenders. Mason may not be a top 10 goalie, but he is an upgrade and should help the Jets make the playoffs.
