Would you pay this for a 1st round pick?

Would you pay this: Hurricanes will buy out Marleau, Don Waddell said. Owe him his $3 million signing bonus now and $833,333 split over the next two years.

For a top 10 protected 2020 1st round pick (probably in the 20-25 range)?

What are you asking? If we would take Marleau and buy him out, while receiving Carolina’s 1st?

$3.833M in actual cash and $6.25M in dead cap. Knowing it was Toronto, I would have done it. Their top 4 is blah after Rielly, they still need to find a way to shed cap and they might lose some of their depth players (Kapanen/Johnsson/Brown) due to this. That 20-25 pick might turn into a 15-20 pick. Not bad for a rebuilding/retooling team.

No, Carolina basically spent $3,833,333 of cap space, for a first round pick that will probably end up in the 20-25 range. Question is if this is a wise use of that money?

Carolina has a lot more cap space than us. Taking Marleau wasn't going to seriously affect any of their plans, which is why they were able to do it before July 1.

If UFA shakes out in a certain way, I would be very amenable to taking 1 year cap dumps for picks. Not in June though.

I don't see why Carolina would do that. They already got a steal with the Toronto deal and they have an abundance of cap space with only Aho as potential big cap hit. Not to mention they got Haula for cheap. Nino for cheap. Carolina is doing all the right things right now to build a TON of future success.

35+ contract they count the full AVV (6.25M)against the cap, even though they pay less actual dollars.

That's not correct. It's $3,833,333 of real money. $6,250,000 of dead cap space. I think Carolina made out like bandits given their situation and how they could deal with that dead cap and still potentially be big spenders in free agency.

Let me make it simpler. If you were an owner, and could buy draft picks, would you buy a 2020 first round pick in the 20-25 range, prior to the draft, for 3,833,333?

Not when it comes with a $6.25M cap hit attached

No way, 4 million dollars is crazy money for pick with high chance of flunking. Rather sign college fa or foreign early mid 20s standout

I tend to agree with this. Seems like a lot of money for a pick that is so hit-or-miss, in my opinion.

Craig Leipold has a net worth of $3.9 billion.

$4 million to a $3.9 billionaire is like $10 to somebody with $10,000 in the bank. It's a Chipotle burrito.

True, but his budget for hockey players is a hard $81,500,000. So 4.7 % of your hockey player budget for pick 20-25.

Claude Giroux was a pick from 20-25. As was Burns, Kesler, Richards, Boeser, Konecny, Rask, Oshie and many others.

I mean, if it was the last 4.7% of the hockey player budget that I had available, and wanted to do other things with it, then yeah, it wouldn't be a slam dunk. But you said that cap space was "ample". And it's not like it's going to haunt you years down the line. We're talking about a 1 year deal.

Example:

If I was looking at $8M in cap space, and really thought that I could get a guy like Pavelski for $7M, then I wouldn't do it.

If I was looking at $25M in cap space, then going from $25M to $19M doesn't seem like it's going to affect anything that I would like to do, so I take the asset 100 times out of 100.

Tried to find some analytics of the monetary value of each draft pick but came up empty. Thought it would be interesting, that's all.
