So if Ovechkin had gone the KHL route first like many other Russians and then entered the league in 2012-13, would his resume be enough to get him into the Hall of fame?

Ovechkin's resume since 2012-13:
1 Hart Trophy
5 Rocket Trophies
1 Conn Smythe Trophy
1 Stanley Cup
3 50 goal seasons

450 GP 268+175=443 Points

With greater longevity, yeah, it would be.

It's not like the career highlights of short-career Hall of Famers Cam Neely, Eric Lindros or Paul Kariya are better.

Three 50 goal seasons and a 49 goal season, plus 32G in 48GP in the lockout year in an era where only a handful of guys a year even hit 40. I think absolutely he would, especially because he'd presumably have excellent KHL counting stats as well.

What a special talent. We've been so lucky to get to watch him, Crosby, and Malkin all at the peak of their powers. And just as those guys start to hit the back 9 of their careers we get McDavid and Laine entering the league.

His resume would include years of obliterating the KHL then

Easily, he might be even more highly thought of. If he entered the NHL at 27 and lead the league in goals 5/6 times people would say that he would've had 10 goal-scoring titles if he came over at 20. In reality he has 7.

the only question is whether OV has to wait..which I doubt. one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history and he just crushed the only knock against him

Didn't Pavel Bure had to wait a while to get into HOF? I don't think Ovechkin's resume post 2012 is better than Bure's career so he would likely not be 1st ballot but should eventually get in.

Ovechkin resume post 2012 pretty easily is better than Bure's career.

Makarov (424), Dryden (397), and a bunch of older guys when the seasons were shorter. Given the Makarov precedent, it would have been impossible to keep Ovi out.

well, except for the fact that Makarov was stuck in USSR until he was 31. And before coming to the NHL he was regarded as one of the best forwards in hockey dominating international competition

The thread is silly.

You can split Ovechkin's career in 4 - and the last 4th alone is STILL enough to get into the HOF.

Since 2014-2015 he has 3 rockets, 1 smythe, and a 2nd hart placement.

Unless OP is implying that's all Ovechkin plays and retires (ie retires with 200-300 games played) - if he's still allowed to add longevity (even if no more awards) it would be enough for HHOF.

How many players not in the HOF today have more than 2 rockets/1 smythe to their name? Or if not that exact trophy count - 3 major awards?

NHL Hall of Fame, no. But it's the Hockey Hall of Fame.

That would be in addition to him tearing up the KHL.

Yes, and if Ovechkin had destroyed the KHL until he was 27 as this hypothetical supposes, he'd have had a similar case...
