Would Detroit take on a bad contract for a prospect/pick?

If Det is 100% commited to a rebuild....SJ and Wash are two of the teams most desperate for cap space

To Det
Paul Martin and SJ 1st
To SJ
Low level cheap prospect and 6th or 7th round pick

To Det
Orpik and Wash 1st
To Wash
Low level cheap prospect and 6 or 7th round pick

I do not think it would cost either team that much for a 1-year cap dump.
We would be looking at 2nd round pick or 3rd.

Also a few people have suggested we buy players out... this is a horrible idea.
When you buy players out, their money is on the books like forever.
Weiss is still on our books for 3 more years. (until the end of 2021).
Its an insane policy, dont buy out anyone. Don't plan to unless its a horrible last resort.

Yeah, I've brought up the Weiss buyout elsewhere. If we had let his deal play out, this would have been his last season. Buying him out and signing Nielsen in his place means we've tied up anywhere from $7-8m per year for that spot. That's just brutal.

That's one way to look at it. Or you can take Weiss 1.67-2.5 mil buyout cost and spread it out on a 23-man roster, making every player about 86k more expensive on average. Buyouts are ugly but it's not fair to just add that cost to Nielsen, the buyout happened a year earlier than Nielsen was even signed.

No. The Illtches are not in the business of assisting other teams with their cap troubles. Teams, unless they're desparate as ****, do not trade you any kind of assets to get rid of good players with bad deals.

You keep chasing the Teraveinen deal and you will end up very disappointed. How about instead of using the cap space for dead players, we actually pressure them to use it for guys who are actually good at hockey? Instead of going after Brooks Orpik to get another 3rd round pick, we actually try to ferret out a good, underperforming player from another team. If I'm trading for a guy from a Washington... I want to make them deal me someone who actually has talent and isn't just a corpse on skates.

And Washington isn't giving you their first to take on Orpik for Kotkansalo or someone. These "forward thinking" moves you're trying to make will just ensure that the Wings suck for another couple years. Even if you're not giving up a whole lot, you're not getting a whole lot. Not with every team in the league now intimately knowing the value of 1st round picks.

Last time a 1st round pick was thrown for a cap dump happened somewhere at 2006 between SJS and NJD

Vladimir Malakhov trade.

The Wings already have the bad contracts, wish we had the picks/prospects that theoretically come along with them.

People need to get this out of their heads. You don't offer to take a bad contract for an asset. You let the albatross choke the **** out of the other team until they're forced to come to you with an offer. You're not trying to help out another team to keep their good players. Remember, you have the leverage. They NEED to clear salary. You don't need to take the player on. Time always favors one party in a negotiation. Know what side of the table you're on and act accordingly. And if some other team jumps in front of you to take Brooks Orpik for a 3rd, well, you missed out on a third round pick and didn't have to pay Brooks Orpik 6M.

In trade or through free agency? I'm thinking of the Cleary/Samuelsson signings when I read this, and I think a lot of folks would like to see Holland take similar chances. Either way, it really just amounts to Holland being more aggressive which has to be almost a necessity at this point. Looking at UFA, I'm not sure I see a good, young buy-low candidate on the blueline. Maybe De Haan's value is lowered because of the time missed this year.

I know this is beating a dead horse a bit at this point, but this is still where having guys like Gator and Helm inked to their deals hurts us if we're also looking at moving our own prospects into the lineup. Part of the reason Holland could take fliers on guys just after the first cap is that there was just more room for guys to step in and take a spot. Looking at next season, if the Wings plan on starting the year with Svech and Ras in Detroit, what roster spot could really be up for grabs? Frk's as the 13th forward? Witkowski's?

Wouldn't be the worst thing in the World for either Frk or Witkowski to be odd man/men out. Frk seems like only a lower end PP specialist and Witkowski is not really needed in today's game, although I do like his physicality and compete level. Maybe move both at the draft and pick up a 3rd or 4th for each, leaving open spots on the roster for the young players to battle out for.
