I've not been a hockey fan for too long (I live in the UK) but Florida's heavy defeat got me thinking, who are the worst team in NHL history? Would the current Panthers side rate amongst them?

Also, what is the record defeat in a NHL game?

Sorry, Panthers fans. Not trying to troll, the result last night just made me ponder the question!

I haven't seen them but I can assure you, this year's Panthers are nowhere near the worst in history. Expansion teams in their first season(s) are often much worse than anything we see nowadays.

See here for a historically bad season, for example.

Yesterday's loss was also harmless to this one here.

I haven't seen the Panthers yet but they may not even be the worst team this season (waaaay to early to tell though). The Sabres looked absolutely atrocious yesterday and if not for their incredible goaltending, the score might have been similar.

Expansion Sharks and Senators were quite bad in their first seasons (70 losses and 24 points). Panthers' recent team does not deserve even mention.

For non-expansion teams the 1980-81 Jets has to be in the conversation. They went 9-57-14 with the still unmatched 30 game win less streak.

The Philadelphia Quakers went 4-36-4 in the 1930-1931 season, this was their only season in the NHL. They're my choice for worst team ever. The current Panthers might have a bad season but it probably won't be that bad.

Thanks, I wasn't suggesting the Panthers were but it was their result what got me thinking.

Anyone know what officially the heaviest NHL defeat is?

San Jose had 37 points in their first season. The 11-71-2 season was actually their second.

The Leafs weren't even the worst team in the league that season. You can at least try not to be biased

It pretty much comes down to the 29/30 Pirates, 30/31 Quakers, 74/75 Capitals or 92/93 Sharks.

Take away Huberdeau, Barkov, Thomas and Fleishmann.
Replace them with me, and the three posters above me instead (no offense guys)

Still not worse than Ottawa and Washington from back in the day

Removing expansion teams from the equation they're not that close to it.

    From the modern era alone:

The 03-04 Pens may have been the worst team I've ever seen in person, just absolutely sucktastic. Nothing like having a 52 point scoring Dick Tarnstrom as your leading scorer and the only two things to vaguely resemble star power in the lineup being Aleksei Morozov and an in waaaaaaaaaay over his head 18 year old Fleury.

The 83-84 Devils and Pens both sucked something exceptionally fierce as well since both were blatantly going all-out for Mario, though it's a bit before my time to really recall just how historically bad those two teams were.

And of course there's the "Dead Wings" era teams.

The cap floor is basically going to ensure that no team is as bad as those teams again any time soon.

    Awful post.

If its not the 74/75 Caps, I don't know what this world has come to.

After 10 years in the league the quebec nordiques had a 31 point season

its allright i guess for an expansion team but its the worst for a "well establised" franchise

By the way, Sakic scored 109 points that year. Young Sundin finished second in team scoring with 59.
