No, those teams were fun. Missing the playoffs with Lindros >>> Making the playoffs with Hakstol. Not even close. The past five seasons have been absolutely horrible.
To each his own, but I did not have “fun” watching the 89/90 - 93/94 Flyers go under .500 & miss the playoffs for 5 straight seasons with rosters loaded with AHL & expansion team-caliber players.

when you ignore all other context of both eras and simply boil it down to making the playoffs vs. not making the playoffs

This is the context. The Flyers were in the bottom half of the league five years in a row back then, but have been 13th or better three times recently.

89-90 17th out of 21 teams
90-91 13th out of 21 teams
91-92 15th out of 22 teams
92-93 17th out of 24 teams
93-94 18th out of 26 teams

12-13 20th out of 30 teams
13-14 13th out of 30 teams
14-15 24th out of 30 teams
15-16 13th out of 30 teams
16-17 19th out of 30 teams
17-18 12th out of 31 teams
18-19 22nd out of 31 teams

oh, but that's just a very wee bit of the overall context
and I'm not adding much but:
the 80's were a great decade for the Flyers without the cherry on top
we suffered for a couple of years before landing one of the most exciting sure-thing stud prospects of all time, and were still in the era where you knew we'd spend tons with the full backing of the owner to attempt to win a Cup

I disagree. The drop was further from their previous peak, but the Lindros trade brought hope. They were willing to do anything and send anything to become a contender again. There is little hope here now. Cap era and a franchise scared of their own shadow and ownership focused primarily on the bottom line.
That was the land of suck back then.

stretch did not last long
first couple years I found the rebuilding process interesting because I approved of it.
Then they acquired Lindros.

Of course from August 1991 - May 1995 I was in college and I no means to watch the Flyers even I wanted too

But my roomates thought I was crazy during spring of 1995 when I was watching the scrambled broadcast on prism or whatever it was at that time.

And again, the difference between 21 teams and 33 or whatever is huge. There's very little hope of ever expecting a Cup.... for any team regardless of your situation.

At some point they may need to divide all these leagues into 2.
40 teams, 2 conferences of 20 and each conference winner wins the cup.....

This is it. They have killed hope.

I'm a die-hard fan of two teams. Nottingham Forest and the Flyers.

My first season ticket as a Forest fan was the 1999-2000 season. This was the year we were relegated from the Premier League for the last time, we've never been back.

I've been a Flyer since 2006 or so. We had a good few years and now we sit in our biggest dry stretch in memory.

It's my fault and i apologise.

that is called no mans land. You don't want to be in that range. You either want to be top 5 or bottom 5. Simple as that.

Yep, should have committed to a complete rebuild. Someday we'll find out why they didn't.
Water under the bridge, Hextall managed to pull off a rebuild without tanking, now Fletcher and AV reap the benefits.

Fans in Pittsburgh don’t even care about the PHI - PIT rivalry anymore. I’ve gone to some games in Pittsburgh and nobody says anything to me. The first time I went I was expecting to be **** on and got nothing.

Just my $.02. For 2 teams that have been in the same division for like 40 of their 50 years in the league, I feel like the rivalry is only like 15 years old. I started watching the Flyers in the early 80s when they were great, but Pens were terrible. By the time they got good in the late 80s/early 90s, we were in decline. Flyers were a little better in the mid/late 90s, then the Pens fell off by the early 2000s. There wasn't any sustained stretch where we were both fighting for first place in the division. I really don't think the hatred started until Crosby arrived and they started winning cups.

2002: Dan McGillis tickles Simon Gagne as Gagne was getting out of the cold tub after his pregame soak (McGillis was notoriously handsy). Simon’s feet slip across the tile floor, he never falls, but the groin was shredded.

Growing up in the 90s I was a Devils hater first and foremost, and there were 7 or 8 teams I easily hated more than the Pens.
