HUGE blow to Wolanin IMO.
He had a leg up on Brannstrom this year and he could have solidified himself as a NHL PMD either here or elsewhere. He obviously still has a chance to do that but the window has closed at least somewhat for this year.

Yes, ice can be slippery, as Brian Elliott reminded us years ago. Good God, how does a guy suffer a catastrophic injury like that on a casual skate just before camp? I'd almost be happier to hear he did it while five beers in at a buddy's cottage - at least that would be a better story.

That puts him on track for a mid-January return. IIRC, Wolanin now requires waivers to go to the AHL, so all we can do is send him on a three game conditioning assignment. Not a chance he's ever get through waivers...

What a bummer. I expected him to clearly be our 2nd best D man this year and a reason to watch.

Guess it opens the door for Brannstrom if he's up for it.

Lajoie as well. I expect him to be more ready than Brannstrom

Oh ya, Lajoie. I'd completely forgotten about him. Seemed like he'd been buried on the depth chart in short order.
He earned a spot last year. He came out of last training camp on fire. Then he got saddled in a shut down role with the shut down specialist Ceci.. that is enough to bury any one. I expect him to push for a spot , if there is one.

Ya he looked good to start the year, came out with a bang really.

They have such a glut of LD prospects, that it's hard to see where he would fit long term.

Agree with the long term. But Wolanin's injury provides an opening for him this year

This sucks, mostly for Wolanin himself. It's between Brannstrom and Lajoie now for the final NHL spot. I'd start Lajoie there and see if Brannstrom beats down the door from Belleville. If he does and Lajoie is playing well you look at moving Hainsey or Boro.

Of course they'll likely have Englund claim the last spot then trade Chabot to make room for Brannstrom. :ha:

Whoaaa, the training camp injury curse goes to Wolanin...

Welcome to Ottawa, Brannstrom!

Lajoie will be competing hard for a spot too I imagine.

Wolanin may require 4 months to recover + any AHL conditioning stint. Enough time for Dumbo Duh to trade veterans such as Ass Captains Boro and Hainsey to make permanent space.

Super brutal for Wolanin, and us...any guess on how many other bodies we lose in training camp? Its bound to happen to us., we always seem to..

Surely this opens up an opportunity for Lajoie. I think it comes down to Lajoie vs Brannstrom. It's also possible to run with 6D if we need to without either of them.

Chabot-Zaitsev
Hainsey-Jaros
Boro-DeMelo

or

Chabot-Zaitsev
Lajoie/Brannstrom-DeMelo
Hainsey-Jaros
Boro

I am gutted by this as I had him making a huge impression this year. He is so ready to be at the NHL level, and he is fun to watch. So upsetting

Brutal.

This was as big an opportunity for Wolanin this year as the one Pageau had last year.
I would say bigger because Pageau had already established himself as a quality NHL player. This could hurt Wolanin in more ways than one. He needs to come back , play in Belleville (likely) and prove himself worthy to send someone else down, or replace someone at the TDL
