While pay is certainly part of the CBA discussion (currently ~$127k base with most players having to take off season jobs), another big item is travel.

It's only been since the 1980s that the NBA teams started using charter flights, but the WNBA has been required to fly commercial, with at least one game forfeited due to travel delays.

But for the playoffs, some teams were allowed to fly charter. Teams can arrive more energized and less mentally fogged for better games.

It's one thing to fly an hour or two on a nonstop flight, quite another to fly cross country. Especially if there are back-to-back games.

Will be interesting to see how this is incorporated into the CBA.

Union director worries over international incidents where players are playing.
...players are still going overseas, because they recognize that to make a living in a sport they absolutely love, that is where they have to go. The salaries are what they are —limited right now in the WNBA — but in Russia, China or Turkey, players have an opportunity to make four, five or even more times than their salary.”

To make ends meet, many players have to go overseas to earn the bucks.

Will be interesting to see how things progress.

The factors that led to WNBA players receiving higher pay...

Paywall. Looking at some of the things that factored into the new CBA.

“Women’s professional sports receive less than 1 percent of corporate sponsorship spend and less than 4 percent of the media covers women’s professional sports and the numbers are even less for team sports,” Engelbert added. “Through WNBA Changemakers, we are trying to show there is more we can achieve for the league, teams, players and fans.”
...
While revenue for the new player compensation model will come from the WNBA Changemakers platform and increased investments by WNBA owners, new events are also expected to generate revenue.

This season marks the launch of the Commissioner’s Cup, wherein each conference’s respective Commissioner’s Cup games record leader will compete for the title and a special prize pool. The WNBA also announced an expanded 36-game schedule and increased television coverage on ABC.

Still looking for more ways to increase income for league.
