They hired someone that was an assistant coach in the NBA that was getting semi-serious rumblings about potentially being a head coach in her own right in the foreseeable future. She's a name in her own right arguably more valuable to a team's marketing that any singular player in the WNBA, and is someone that could potentially be used as a proof of intent to try to win a championship to attract free agents.

I respect the point being made, but this doesn't seem too shocking to me.
