With the Medvedev signing, is the Flyers defense depth at least average?

That really doesn't look half bad.

Medvedev is considered the best defenseman outside of the NHL. He's at least a top 4 dman. Gudas had really positive hype while he was in TBay. Streit is a good vet. Schenn is still a work in progress. Schultz keeps it simple. MDZ is a solid powerplay specialist.

They have a little bit of everything. I would at least say they are middle of the pack now.

That's nice and all but you're going to sacrifice a season or two with putrid D. At least if you deal a forward/forward prospect you can get a solid defenseman with term. Unless Hextall's plan is to offer guys like Martin, Petry, Sekera, Green, Beauchemin big $.

We know the next 2 years are going to be rough we are looking to build within and have consistent success

If we had two top pairing D it would look alright...

if we are honest:

Streit: #3
Del Zotto: #4
MacDonald: #4-5
Schultz: #5
Grossmann: #5-6
Schenn: #5-6
Gudas: #6

Medvedev: I think #4- or #5 is the most likely... but could be slightly better or worse.

I just really hope all the swirling rumours about Zaitsev are true...

The Flyers defense is basically just as bad as the Oilers defense. Both teams have a large group of #4 to #6 defenseman.

It's gonna come down to what kind of defenseman they are, and if Hakstol can make it work with them. There are a lot of 4-6 guys, but if they all have mobility and some amount of two-way skill set, then Hakstol's system is gonna make them look a lot better. So basically, if we can get rid of Schenn and Grossmann, and if Gudas isn't a regular on the team, then we should be okay for now.

They got a lot of bottom pairing D-men with a few top 4's in there too. Streit is a solid #2 but he is closing in on 40 soon and they really don't have anyone to replace him.

By the time he's 40 there will be 2-4 possible replacements ready for the NHL.

Maybe this is the best way to look at our D.

We added Medvedev and Gudas but lost Coburn.

It is not better on paper right now than it was last year.

Not sure how I forgot him

Oh and Manning. Log jam is an understatement.

That's 15 defenseman who could be on an NHL roster

I wouldn't put Manning on that list, I'm convinced he'll be in Europe sooner than later. He doesn't have any skills that make him stand out and I can't imagine him ever sticking in the NHL in any capacity.

The others are extremely promising though, and we might even add another in a month.

At this point, Morin, Ghost, Sanheim, and Hagg all project as top 4 dmen. Gotta wait and see how they actually pan out though.

I'm also assuming Zaitsev signs here and the Flyers may draft a defenseman with one of their firsts.

Nobody with any knowledge of the KHL considers Medvedev to be the best defenseman in the league. He is decent at best and declining.

I think he is a good bet to not make the team at camp.

BUT, if we lose Grossmann and Schenn and either Morin or Ghost make the jump to the big club, we are better than last year.

Streit is at least a good #3 defensemen on most teams. I don't think Edmonton has anyone as good as Streit right now.
