With the Medvedev signing, is the Flyers defense depth at least average?

That really doesn't look half bad.

Medvedev is considered the best defenseman outside of the NHL. He's at least a top 4 dman. Gudas had really positive hype while he was in TBay. Streit is a good vet. Schenn is still a work in progress. Schultz keeps it simple. MDZ is a solid powerplay specialist.

They have a little bit of everything. I would at least say they are middle of the pack now.

They still don't have any top pairing dmen, so no it's still pretty bad. They do have some intriguing prospects who could be in the future though

They are one of a few teams lacking a number one defenseman, and I don't follow the Flyers that much but it seems like Streit is a solid 2 at the moment but he's up there in age.

The Oilers signed one of the top KHL dmen a year ago in Belov, and we all know how that turned out. I don't think this signing will be nearly as significant as some are hoping.

If they end up signing Nikita Zaitsev (which appears likely at this point) and are able to find takers for Grossmann and Schenn they will have at least a respectable defense which is something they haven't had in 2 or 3 years.

Mark Streit
Michael Del Zotto
Andrew Macdonald
Nick Schultz
Yevgeni Medvedev
Nikita Zaitsev
Radko Gudas

That is at least an average and respectable defense. When you consider that they have Travis Sanheim, Sam Morin, and Shayne Gostisbehere on the way, an that they will probably add to that with all of their draft picks in June, Ron Hextall is definitely making serious strides to turning around a pretty crappy defense that Paul Holmgren left him both on the NHL roster and in their prospect pool.

They probably went from 25-30 to 20-25. I wouldn't say the defense is average yet.

Streit is more of a middle pairing guy forced into a top pairing role.

Agree on the prospects but the list you made is still well below average

the problem with the list is that they ALL are depth guys....but we know this.

Streit has been good for us...but he is a middle pairing guy on a good team. MDZ and Schultz played well last year and are mid pairing guys at best.

The rest is just depth.

Reality is...most of these guys are good bottom pair guys...nothing else.

Our future lies in the defensemen not listed....our prospects.

I'd say Streit is a solid #2. Guy was top 10 in D scoring this year and he's pretty good defensively.

Still below average but it is going to look completely different within the next 2 years. Adding Zaitsev and possibly Provorov/Werenski could go a long way.

Will either of their 2 young studs be cracking the roster?

Ghost...and I can't remember the name of the other one...?

You are probably thinking of Morin but Sanheim has passed both in terms of potential for many Flyers fans. It's tough to say whether any of them make the team out of camp but it is likely 1 of them is on the team by December/January.

Reading some of the Russians posters comment on Medveded, they said that he's not that good. They said Medvedev was terrible at the WC, so I wouldn't be expecting much out of Medvedev other than a 5-6 D that may be good or terrible.

No, our blueline is bottom 10 in the league at best if not bottom 5...wait 3 years and ask this questions again when Sanheim, Morin, Haag, Alt, Ghostibhere get a crack at the pro roster.

I'd say Streit is a solid #2. Guy was top 10 in D scoring this year and he's pretty good defensively.

Most of that scoring has to do with him being on a PP with Giroux. While you could say he played a big part on that PP, you could also say the PP was just as good the season before with Timonen and looked as good when MDZ shortly took over.

I wouldn't consider him a #2 on a cup contending team.

We're still pretty below average to be honest. Hopefully bringing in Zaitsev and a few other moves during the offseason and we'll get closer to average NHL calibre.

It really does.

And I think you are seriously overrating the Medvedev signing. It absolutely could work out in the Flyers' favor but I think even calling him "at least a top 4 D-man" at this point is very optimistic. European veterans coming over to the NHL tend to crash and burn more often than not, unfortunately.

How has MDZ been?
They have fantastic D prospects but until one of them make the jump to a top pair defenceman they will be stuck with a below average D corp

No way there are 10 teams with worse D than PHI.

Oilers are pretty much the only ones with worse D and even they have younger quality players moving up to grab top pairing spots.

I disagree. It's an average (and at worst) or slightly below average group. They don't have one true top pairing defenseman which really hurts them but they'd have 4 guys who are all at least decent 2nd pairing type defenseman and 1 guy in Streit who is a very good 2nd pairing guy.
