Drafted in the second round, 42nd overall by the Everett Silvertips in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, Owen Zellweger had a real breakout season this year. He went from a bit part in 2019-20 to one of the key members of the team. The Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native put up two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 11 games during this COVID shortened season. He also joined Team Canada for the IIHF Under-18 World Championships. Zellweger scored one goal and seven assists for eight points in seven tournament games. Super late birthday, he is 5 days separated from not being eligible.
PPG+ player both in WHL and U18 usually bodes well, especially for defensemen.

Size is an issue but sounds like he can separate himself with his skating alone. Overall sounds like a good prospect.

Great pick. One of the youngest players in the draft with his production is excellent. Let's hope he keeps trending up.

All of the angry posters who were upset about not drafting Eklund got their undersized skill player
Interesting pick with Drysdale already here and a lack of defensive defensemen(physical)

Seeing some reporting his height as 5’10 and with being 1 week away from next draft as a 17 year old I hope he can grow another inch or two and put on some size. His skating and skill sounds great so fingers crossed here.

Pronman's write-up:
Zellweger was a very good all-situations player for Everett in his short WHL season and a top defenseman at the U18 worlds. His skating stands out when you watch him. He has good quickness to lead plays up ice, while also having fantastic edgework to evade pressure. He’s an undersized player, but Zellweger defends well enough due to his skating and compete, closing well on checks and working hard to win pucks. Offensively he’s not a dynamo, but he has the skill and offensive hockey sense to be a points and power-play type at higher levels, showing the instincts to find seams and make tough plays on the move. He’s also one of the youngest players in the draft. In a sentence, Zellweger projects as a second- or third-pair NHL defenseman who could be on a second power-play unit.

I love defensemen that have that high-end skating combined with puck skills and iq. They are deadly.
