New York Rangers 1st Round Pick #22 OA - K'Andre Miller (LD)

35. K’Andre Miller, D, USNTDP-USHL
Jan. 21, 2000 | 6-foot-3 | 206 pounds
GP: 58 | Goals: 9 | Points: 29 | Shoots: Left
Skating: 60
Puck Skills: 50
Physical Game: 60
Hockey sense: 50
Miller is a recent convert to defense and, while he has a bit more projection to his game and could be considered a home run swing of sorts as an NHL prospect, there are a lot of things to like about him. He’s a great athlete. He’s 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, and is one of the better skating defensemen in the entire draft. Miller is also a high-character workhorse who flies up and down the ice. He’s incredibly tough on his checks in battles, and with his great closing speed, he gets in guys faces quickly. With his speed, he’s able to jump up into the attack. Despite being a converted forward, my major question on him is how high his offensive ceiling is. I’ve seen enough flashes from him that I think there’s something there, like the odd great pass or rush, but he’s not very consistent in that regard right now.
USNTDP U18 coach Seth Appert said: “He has the skating ability, the length and the competitiveness to be a shut-down, mobile, hard defender, but then he has the explosiveness to add offense, as well.”

Yikes. I don't like this pick. Had this guy as a mid/low 2nd rounder. Reminds me a lot of Day.

People will think he has tools he doesn't possess because he's tall and can skate.

Obviously I hope I end up being wrong, but I don't think he's presently a good hockey player. But if he puts it all together, maybe you get a Skjei type of player.

another pick with huge upside. had him ranked 18 but I think giving up the 2nd round pick in a deep (10-50) draft is heavy

Zero problems with the pick....none.

I think this is a good pick. I just wonder...why the trade? Was someone for sure gonna get him first?

Weird.

Gave away 48 for a guy who would have probably been there at 26.
WTF!!!

Initial reaction: Moving up four slots to give up 48 OV...damn. But I'm very pleased with the Miller tape, and interview. Marketable kid. Nicely done, congratulations - make us proud.

Oh, and great opportunity to reuse those #10 JT Miller jerseys :sarcasm:

Now lets finish this off tonight with a steal at #28.

Love it. Physical specimen, beautiful skater, tons of untapped potential, and a seemingly great kid.

Get me Bokk at #28 and I'm sleeping like a baby tonight.

Remember we have a whole lot of RFA pieces that are worth at least a 2nd, i am sure we will recoup a 2nd at some point tomorrow

Should have given up 28 instead of 26 especially with guys like Wilde, Bokk and Veleno still there but you want potential this kid has it. He will get better defensively honing his craft at Wisconsin

In his defense, he got almost no coaching this year. Appert is an atrocious coach. He will not get worse coaching than he's gotten the last two years.

Ok, how is it that a 4 spot jump to 25 worth a pick that's 30 spots lower than a 4 spot jump to 22? Gorton got robbed there.

If Miller booms, absolutely not.

*Note: With Book coming off the board at 25, I feel better about kicking 26 to make the Miller deal happen.
