Finally am giving this one a go. Any do’s and dont’s for a beginner?
If you see a Gwent card (that isn't ridiculously weak) go ahead and buy it. Gwent is fun, and it's the fastest way to make money when you really need it immediately.
Don't underestimate the importance of alchemy. When I first started, I assumed I would need to find a full set of ingredients every time I wanted to craft items... it took a while to figure out they automatically regenerate. Bombs, oils, potions can make a massive difference against otherwise-difficult enemies. Check in with every merchant and herbalist until you find the ingredients (or stumble across them) for useful items and craft them early so they can tip the balance in as many fights as possible. For this reason, it's important to loot crates and check merchants for recipes.
Just a simple thing, but once you have a crossbow don't be afraid to go swimming. One shot from the crossbow kills a Drowner underwater, and the quick-shot is accurate enough to usually hit them in one or two tries. The idea of swimming in a pool of Drowners seemed terrifying until I realized how easy they are to kill.
