Winnipeg's MTS Centre getting $1m upgrade

Sources close to True North Sports & Entertainment said the MTS Centre, which opened in the fall of 2004, is currently undergoing an approximately $1-million renovation, including a $500,000 upgrade to the ice plant.
Improvements are also planned for both the home and visiting teams' dressing rooms, as well as the installation of acrylic glass surrounding the ice surface. (The latter is an NHL requirement designed to reduce concussions.)

Other activity at the MTS Centre includes the expansion of the number of corporate suites to 57 and the virtual doubling of the number of camera positions to 37.
The latter will involve an unspecified number of "seat kills." Renovations to the MTS Centre press box started in 2010.

Practice facility getting some security updates, and color scheme of signage may change.

I've seen a few articles recently that has the MTS Centre at 15,003, which would be a drop of 12 seats I believe. That could account for the camera seat kill.

The $500,000 upgrade to the ice plant is interesting. I never saw a problem with the ice at the Moose games, but maybe with the additional 7,000 people etc. on a nightly basis, there will be a lot more heat to contend with.

I imagine a more significant renovation plan will be developed over the course of 2011-2012 and be implemented in the summer of 2012. This is probably all they had time for on short notice, and should be more than sufficient for year 1.
