    Uhhh....

Is this a little strange to anyone else? He’s a legend and all it’s just weird to see it happen nearly 60 years later.

I can hardly believe it....They had a rally to retire his number outside of the Olympia in the late 60's. Better late than never

Was this some kind of policy which Mr. I could have been against?

Seems to be that everything is happening now under Chris Ilitch. The rebuild started, and jerseys are going on the rafters....

So... I'm surprised to learn he's still alive. He's 91. It's great he gets to see this.

I'm hoping this is the first of multiple overdue retirements. Get Aurie done next, and then the Fedorov discussion can begin in earnest.

yeah it's kinda weird out of nowhere like this

I guess maybe Mike was against it for whatever reason and Chris wanted to do it but let a little time pass after Mike's death first out of respect for him? reaching a bit but I guess that would explain it

i'm glad to see it happen however it came about though,he's a top 10 Defenseman of all time and spent his entire career at that position here(was a Center in Toronto)

so, want Fedorov's number retired? Just hope we continue to suck and attendance hurts to the point of doing something to get people through the doors.

I really doubt they're worried about attendance against Toronto of all teams

Kelly won 8 Stanley Cups on his career (DET 1950, DET 1952, DET 1954, DET 1955, TOR 1962, TOR 1963, TOR 1964, TOR 1967)

    One Norris (1954) and four Lady Byngs (1951, 1953, 1954, 1961).

Switched from Detroit-era defence to defensive Center in Toronto, because Punch Imlach wanted somebody to shut down Jean Beliveau. Montreal had won 5 Cups straight (1956-60) and when Kelly came in at 1960, it stopped and Leafs did won Cup 3-times on a row.

    What a story.

    About damn time!

Glad to hear he's still around to witness it.

This game kinda makes sense too because he was a Leaf for so long after the Wings.

worth noting as well that the Norris trophy didn't exist until 1954

we'll never know for sure how many he'd have won but he got all 18 first place votes for the year end all star teams in 1951,1952,and 1953

Exactly this. Red deserves it but it's pretty clear why this is happening. I'm not outraged because red is still alive to see it. If he had already passed this would be very distasteful.

how so? nobody actually goes to games for this stuff other than the night it happens

if that's the reason they're doing it why the hell would they pick a game against Toronto of all nights?

He certainly deserves the honor. I do think this could eventually help Fedorov's case as well. But still Red Kelly is one of the most talented players to ever wear a Wings jersey and was a massive reason for our dominance in the 50's.

If we would "inflate" the level of retired numbers, this would be my list:

    #1 Sawchuck
    #4 Kelly
    #5 Lidström

    #6 Aurie
    #7 Lindsay
    #9 Howe
    #10 Delvecchio
    #12 Abel

    #13 Datsyuk
    #16 Konstantinov
    #19 Yzerman
    #40 Zetterberg
    #91 Fedorov

I would also consider putting #14 Shanahan there, but not Chelios.

Been way over due, hes a top 10 dman all time based on his time in Detroit. Only left the organization because Jack Adams was more like Adolf Adams and forced him out. Would've had at least 4 Norris trophies if they didnt essentially make the award up for him and would probably have a Conn Smythe as well.

From an all time stand point, I would guess Howe and Lidstrom are only viewed as better players while Yzerman is a better "wing"
