Really hope they take a look at the KHL. Any defensemen they could pull over would be worth the reward, as there's virtually no risk in these signings.

Yeah but 99% of Russian defenseman suck. Isnt Markov still the only relevant russian on defense?

Huh? There are plenty of great Russian defensemen. Historically talking Feitisov, Konstintinov, Zubov etc. Even today you have good players in Markov and Orlov, Sergachev looks to be a top 10 pick.

Why discriminate based on nationality? I'm advocating exploring the option in the KHL, regardless of nationality.

How close are we to the 50 contract limit? With a lot of prospects coming up, might not be worth it to sign many FA’s unless they are can’t miss Dekeyser/Panarin level players

That's a great question. I'm pretty sure we have a few spares with Nedomlel getting traded and guys like Lashoff, Aubry, and McCollum due for contracts.

According to General Fanager we currently have 50 contracts on the books, but 20 contracts are up next year.

Richards, Helm, Sheahan, Pulkkinen, Quincey, DeKeyser, Marchenko, Mrazek, Miller, Cleary, Andersson, Nosek, Lashoff, Campbell, Sproul, Callahan, Coreau, Aubry, Miele

are the expiring contracts.

Obviously the # of contracts won't dip to 30 due to resignings, but still should be opening up some spots.

I remember players sent to juniors (Svechnikov, Turgeon, Saarijärvi, Hicketts) and players loaned to Europe (Holmström) are not counted against that 50-contract limit.

I think you are right, but 3 outta 4 are AHL bound. Saarijarvi could still play in the OHL, or loan him out to another pro team.

TBH, I say let Saarijarvi stay in the minors without pro...expansion and all.

Could look at Nikita Zaitsev from the same team as Radulov, CSKA. Right handed Dman with a good shot. There were rumors over the summer saying after this season when his contract runs out he would come to the NHL but he may have denied that. Think it would be worth the shot to bring him over if he wanted to come play for the Wings.

One of KHL's best Dman and is still only 24 so has time to develop still even if it takes him a year to find his game in the NHL like Kuzenetsov and Tarasenko.

I'd offer him 2 years, 8 million.

Rumor is he likes Toronto.

Do we even have the room to sign anyone?

Seems we currently have 44/50 Contracts (general fanager)

and 6 contracts exempt (not-pro)

So we have 50 contracts already.

UFA AHL guys include: Cleary, Meile, Andersson.

Can we assume Cleary retires? And we have room for 1 contract only??? (for next year)

50 is the limit for contracts playing pro in North America. The upper limit of contracts including prospects playing elsewhere is something like 80.
