Fast forward 5-6 years. Datysuk has retired, and Zetterberg, Kronwall and Franzen either have as well or will be soon.

Nyquist - Larkin - Mantha
Tatar - Sheahan - Pulkinnen
Athanasiou - Helm - Jurco
Abdelkader - Gledenning - Callahan

Ericsson - Oullete
Sproul - Smith
Kindl - Marchenko

Sorry guys, just don't see Tatar ever being better than Jurco.

I don't see Kindl being with the team in 5-6 years.

Agreed on both.

If we're lucky, AA breaks out like I want him to and gets the 3/4C spot and we roll 4 strong centers down the middle. Weren't they trying him out as center at the camp?

Jurco is top6 material. Pulks is 3rd liner + PP specialist. Maybe 2nd line stuff if he really improves. Jurco just has the physical gifts to put him over Pulks. Bertuzzi has really shown a lot of promise as well. I think he ends up in the bottom6 somewhere in the next 6 years. I'm also intrigued by Nosek and Janmark. I really don't want Glendening as the 4C. Barring some big strides from him he's just not good enough for it.

DD and Big E are still here in 5 years. I expect Ouellet and Marchenko and Smith also. Probably Sproul as well.

I think Tatar is the better player as of right now IMO. It's still such a tough call though. Tatar only has 1 full season under his belt and Jurco doesn't even have half a season yet. I think a lot of it will depend on who gets the top 6 minutes/opportunity more in the near future. I would lean towards Jurco there, especially if Babcock sticks around.

1) We're not going to ice a roster of all players under 30. Ain't ever gonna happen.
2) Nastasiuk being on the team in a bottom 6 role in 5 years or so is very likely IMO. Don't see him on anyone's roster.
3) I think Axel Holmstrom has top 6 potential, though not sure if he'll reach it. I think he will be the next Nyquist/Franzen/Ericsson late round Sweden steal. I liked Janmark as the top Sweden sleeper, but I'm optimistic about Homer Jr. now.
4) Defense is an absolute crap shoot. Have no idea who they keep, and who goes. Going to be a lot of movement though, since there will inevitably be a big log jam on the back end.

In 6 years, guys like Nyquist, Ericsson, Dekesyer, Smith, Helm, Abby, are all gonna be 30+. A lot of the other players mentioned are going to be 27-29.

Yeah but its pointless to predict who we're gonna be acquired over this time period. We could leave blank spots for position that we feel will be addressed by trade or signing like #1/2C or top 4 d-man, but its a crapshoot to guess, and most of the stars now we'll decline by that period anyway. Plus on this site if we did this wed have a rosters toews, mackinnon and ekblad on it.

Kronwall will be 38, 5 years from now. And depending how you count, in the final year of his current contract. Quite possible he is still hanging around.

Hank and Kronner will still be here. If Hank's back is really fixed, then I could actually see him have a very production later 30s ala Sakic. Him missing so much time early and not really being a speed reliant player, I think keeps him effective for quite awhile if his back/wrist hold out. I think Franzen retiring by then is probably pretty high.

My roster in 5 years.

Nyquist-UFA-Mantha
Zetterberg-Sheahan-Jurco
Tatar or Pulu-Larkin- AA
Lil Bert-Helm-Nasty

I just don't see the number 1 center in the system yet. And Larkin is probably in his second season at best. I think Sheahan tops out as a complimentary top 2 center. That lineup has a lot of speed, some decent size, and shouldn't get pushed around.

Sproul or Smith- Dekeyser
Kronwall- Oulette
Ericsson- Marchenko

Hopefully one of Sproul or Smith hit it big offensively. We've got some great defensive stalwarts in Oulette & Dekeyser coming in. We need the PP QB/ Weapon though to develop. If not they'll go the UFA route and get another because Kronner probably won't be a big enough offensive threat at that point.

This did not age well. Shows how much armchair GMs need to lay off...

I especially lol’d at the Jurco better than Tatar part.

Little did we know the big log jam would become a polite way of saying "a backed up toilet" instead of the literal definition of an actual log jam.

Two insane things.

1. Of the 7 defensemen listed...Ericsson is the one still with the team...
2. The Franchise have traded Jarnkrok, Janmark, Pulkkinen, Jurco, Sheahan, Tatar, Sproul, Smith, Mrazek and god knows who I'm missing on the list. Point being, plenty of fairly high picked players in the draft who except for Tatar, never really given a proper chance in the type of role they originally were drafted for. The "They must earn it" bull...it annoys me. Put players in a position which gives them the best option to succeed, don't put players in checking roles which they won't manage.

Adding to that. They traded Jarnkrok and Janmark because they wanted to keep Sheahan. Then traded Sheahan.

And, didn't give Bedard a new contract as goalie coach because wanted to bring up goalie coach from Grand Rapids to groome Mrazek. Then traded Mrazek.

Proper role? The ****.

There is about one guy on that list that got "ruined" by misuse.
Jurco never should have been pushed towards a checking role. That's it.

Everyone else in that list sucked, was named Tomas Tatar and was only okay, or was taken in the fifth round or later where if they stick in the NHL for even 20 games they're a success.

Jarnkrok: drafted to be a top 6C. Struggled in the AHL and was traded for a need. He's still not a top 6 C. He's Nashville's appropriately paid, Swedish Darren Helm.
Janmark: 3rd round pick. Was a flyer to be successful. Gifted with top line minutes in a high scoring lineup in Dallas, got 30 points.
Pulkkinen: Garbage and out of the league.
Sheahan: Given many chances to be the top 6C he was drafted to be. Got dealt when the Wings wanted cap for AA's contract and was also dealt because he went 81 games without a goal.
Tatar: Bonafide top 6 winger, got a great return at the TDL.
Sproul: Literally couldn't play defense. Like at all. And was only okay offensively.
Smith: Given a chance to be a top 4D by Detroit ad infintum. But he had the hockey IQ of a plank of wood.
Mrazek: Was given the #1 role over Jimmy. Was given $4M as an RFA because he had taken the #1 role. Then lost it and all semblance of being an okay goalie.

The Wings picked bad players who didn't ever take a next step to become better.
