I wish they could have talked him into this before the Griffins playoff run. I think that would have helped him in terms of a starting spot in pro hockey. I guess we will find out, he was a good gamble pick at the time a big guy that skated pretty well with a big shot. He took a lot of good steps in college, reminds me a little of David Booth when I have seen him. Should be interesting, I have a hard time seeing him straight to Detroit but I guess if he has a big camp it might be a possibility.

Big guys that can skate, we seem to be getting more and more of those these days.

Glad we are retaining him.

I just know he’s fast and can shoot. Could be a good depth winger down the line.

Good to see Holland was able to get the kid inked. Hope he gets a shot in camp, could be an interesting team with the potential size/speed combo forming up front. Not likely to be that good of a team, but could be entertaining.

The article in the OP added whoever the wings pick 6th to a list of promising young forwards. Do you think that was poor writing, or do they really think we're taking a forward?

As someone who has watched the kid a lot, I still question whether he will be able to handle the speed of the NHL game. His skating has certainly gotten better and his top-end speed is ok, but I am concerned about his one-step quickness. I will give the kid credit though, he knows how to score goals and has really matured physically over the last four or five years.

Chances he makes the team?

barring trade or injury probably really low

he's probably like 15th-16th in the pecking order for a spot on the Wings right now behind Larkin/Zetterberg/Mantha/Nyquist/Abdelkader/Athanasiou/Nielsen/Helm/Frk/Bertuzzi/Glendening/Witkowski/Rasmussen/Svechnikov/possibly Turgeon

not to say he can't get a shot later on but making the team out of camp looks to be an extreme long-shot at best at the moment

Fair. I kinda wonder if there was any language in the contract about his NHL minutes to get him to sign.

Is this just DDK only a forward, who will get a 5 mil per year deal in a couple season, for some reason??? Still don't know what was ever considered to be so good about DDK, I truly never saw anything special in him, and always thought of him as a well below average big guy who skates pretty well.

I doubt any language like that is allowed in contracts.

Players are promised playing time all the time to get them to sign, especially college free agents, so it wouldn't be surprising if they made that promise. They did it with DDK!

Signed for a 2-year deal.

925k per year (NHL minimum).

I think he will jump in straight on (on the spot of Booth etc.). These college players usually are physically ready, or if you aren't at 23-year old, something is totally wrong.

Wings get growing bigger this summer, good. Pope is 6'3, Rasmussen 6'6.

I'd prefer us to be a skilled, fast-skating, big-sized team like Winnipeg in the future.

I wonder if he ends up competing with Martin Frk for one NHL spot, given that he something of a PP specialist (12 of his 20 goals last year were with the man advantage). Granted he is left-handed and doesn't quite have Frk's shot, but his size and skating may allow him to be a little less one-dimensional than Frk. Blashill seemed to sour on Frk last season after his hot start.
