Willie Huber, a Hamilton resident who spent 10 seasons in the National Hockey League, passed away suddenly from a suspected heart attack yesterday morning. He was 52.

Huber had got up to let the dogs out during the early morning hours yesterday, and came back inside around 7 a.m., said Laura Huber, Willie's sister.

Huber's wife, Dawn, found him in bed not long afterward and called 911.

Laura said he died suddenly and peacefully from a suspected heart attack, and was not able to be revived by paramedics.

Born in Strasskirchen, Germany, in 1958 to parents Henry and Sonia, Huber first gained a love for hockey on his family's backyard rink on Homewood Avenue in Hamilton.

Very sad to hear. For a long time in the 80's he was one of the biggest players in the league. I think he stood 6'5" when seeing players that tall was rare.

Fine player, one of the best goal-scoring defenders of the early 1980s and an All-Star in 1983. He and Reed Larson were a deadly PP combination for Detroit during the Dead Thing era.

At the time, he had a pretty special combination of size and talent. Spent most of his career on awful teams, and it's a shame his career was derailed by knee problems just when he received an opportunity to play for a decent team in NYR.

RIP.
