Waiting until the 16th to announce Chad Larose as the "Captain's Special Helper"? Boy they're really stringing it out this year, eh?

From an N&O article:

Williams was the obvious choice last season, only to be kneecapped by Peters’ dopey co-captaincy, an idea so bad that the ostensibly demoted co-captains both agreed Thursday that it was a bad idea and they thought so all along

“I didn’t love it,” Jordan Staal said, and Justin Faulk said much the same thing as well.

They both also endorsed Williams as captain, which has been a fait accompli since Brind’Amour was hired. There’s a reason every player the Hurricanes added this summer said Williams called them right away. It wasn’t so much that he felt obligated. He also felt empowered, knowing this was coming.

Also worth noting:

Brind’Amour spoke for more than 15 minutes, leading up to the essential message that will underline this training camp, and indeed this season.

Without pointing fingers or assigning blame, the bar somehow got lowered around here, Brind’Amour said, to the point where mediocrity became acceptable, where the goal wasn’t to win the Stanley Cup, but to compete, to squeak into the playoffs.

As far as Brind’Amour is concerned, the only reason to do this is to win the Stanley Cup. Unrealistic? Perhaps. But that’s the starting point. That’s where the bar will be set under Brind’Amour.

I don't like this choice. Better than the co-captaincy last year, but barely. So we either have a new captain next year or we sign JWill to a contract we shouldn't really give a guy his age with his skating on the decline already.

They should have just extended Aho and given him the C.

I don’t see how this is “barely” any better then co-captains. Your given a C to a guy that has been apart of multiple winning clubs, Stanley cup multiple times, consmyth. Been around for almost two decades and is well respected and by all accounts and reports was the de facto leader in all but letter last season on a team of still very young guys where most have not sniffed the jock strap of success, minus Staal and the Chicago boys. This was really the only choice when it came to Captain. Alternates could be debated. Who bloody fricking cares if that have to choose a new one next year. Gives the future Captain more time to mature and hopefully get some winning under their belt, It’s not like I was crying myself to sleep in misery all summer because the Canes hadn’t announced a captain.
