That's the question.. I think he's in the 5-6 range. Anymore is overpayment.Better question: What is a fair and honest price to pay for Dougie?
the devils have the organizational need at the position with only severson being considered a mid-term piece and hardly any rhd prospects. smith played on the right side basically his whole junior career and might be able to switch. but he forms currently plays on the first pairing with severson and they play quite well together. cap space shouldn't be an issue next season and with subban's 9 million getting off the cap one year later, it shouldn't be an immediate issue down the road.Jersey would be my prediction. For Flyers to get involved someone expensive would have to be taken in the ED.
He will get paid but the salaries have been stunted by covid. I think 7.5, 8 the highest, for that he might stay put in Car. I think he's an option for us as well. And I think Hanifin woudl be a great add as well.the devils have the organizational need at the position with only severson being considered a mid-term piece and hardly any rhd prospects. smith played on the right side basically his whole junior career and might be able to switch. but he forms currently plays on the first pairing with severson and they play quite well together. cap space shouldn't be an issue next season and with subban's 9 million getting off the cap one year later, it shouldn't be an immediate issue down the road.
so yes, njd should be interested. if they are willing to break the bank long term, is tough to say. 4x9-10m i would easily do for hamilton from a nj point of view.
from a devils perspective i rather overpay in aav than term. 7x7.5 is most likely worse than 4x9m.He will get paid but the salaries have been stunted by covid. Pure numbers you are talking about $52.5 mill for 7 years vs 36 mill for 4. He would be ufa at 32 so for him to equal the 7 year deal he’d need to sign for $16.5 mill this $5.5 mill per at 32.from a devils perspective i rather overpay in aav than term. 7x7.5 is most likely worse than 4x9m.
hamilton is by no means old, as he only turns 28 in the summer. but long term committments are more risky and if a player declines or get injury prone, the shorter term provides the needed flexibility.
from a player point of view abolutely understandable. but things have changed massively. there were only 6 contract signed since 0ct.8, with a term of 5 years and longer:Pure numbers you are talking about $52.5 mill for 7 years vs 36 mill for 4. there’s a reason ufas at 28-30 go max term as it’s a lower leverage position to get a deal at 33/34 even if you are looking at a much lower cap hit.
Benn from Dallas gets $9.5 and he started that at 28 same age as Hamilton will be but to drop him to a 5/6 year term Dallas would have to pay him closer to $12 mill per to get to $60 mill and he’d had 3 years to make up the $16 mill diff. At 33, given his production and continual decline would he get $5.33 mil per for 3 years?
more ufa years you buy on the second contract it likely means you pay for it on the backend of their ufa deal.
