Will we ever have lone superstar after McDavid?

I think I get it. Will we see another player of his caliber again? Yes.
We will see where there a quite non-debtabale and #1 player in the league? Yes, but that's far from a guarantee. Since Lemiuex, there has always been an Ovi to a Crosby, or at least someone else who had an argument for #1. McDavid is pretty much unanimously the #1 in NHL rn, which is pretty rare.

Lone superstar? Why is Drai on his line then? The guy thats an actual center.

Why not split them up to better the team....if McDavid was as good as claimed hed make players like Dupuis/Kunitz(What Crosby did) put up crazy numbers. Instead he has Drai. That would be like the Pens putting Malkin with Crosby.

They prob dont win their cups but each would have scored 150+ pts a year
Its ridiculous to tack on 30-40 points to career highs. You have no clue how they would have played together.

No.

McDavid will be the last lone-ranger superstar.

Ever.

Amazing thread, OP.

A real jewel. Wow.

So incredible.

If EVERYTHING works out for McDavid, he will end up the third-best center in Oilers history. Not too shabby considering 1 and 2.

McDavid already has has many Art Ross than Messier has top 3 in is career, if everything works out for McDavid he could end up really high all time with that kind of start. He is arguably already the third best center in Oilers history imo, ahead of Doug Weight.

2016-2017 to today, regular season
McDavid: 332p in 245 GP, 1.36 PPG
Kucherov: 315p in 239 Gp, 1.32 PPG

Playoff:
McDavid: 9p in 13 GP
Kucherov: 19 p in 20 GP

Not sure McDavid attained that lone superstar status, Crosby/Ovechkin still were when he started in the league and Kucherov/MacKinnon could be with him when the other 2 will have faded in star status.

But for the question, will we ever have a lone superstar after McDavid, if the level of separation asked is the one McDavid achieved in the last 3-4 season's, probably yes, why not ? First line player / first unit power play player are still getting massively more ice time than 4 liner.
This, I almost fell asleep reading it. Hopefully a better player comes along!

If inner city kids grew up playing hockey instead of basketball and football, McDavid would be like the 10th best player in the league.

There is a rumor, that people use only 10 % of their brain. If someone could push it up to 20 % (hello genetic engineers), can skate, can pass... Vuala, we have a second Gretzky.

I thought that the summer was over, shouldn't you be in school/doing your homework?

No, I get what you're saying, as the level of play goes up, it's harder for anyone to stand out even more...to a point. As has been pointed out, cap space alone won't let you field a team of superstars (and someone who is 'that' good won't want to be playing for league minimum). But even if we discount that, the human body 'does' have limits, but we're nowhere near reaching them. You're theoretical 'everyone is almost perfect' league could possibly happen I suppose, but if it does, it will be looong after all of us are dead & forgotten.

Everyone wants to be the modern day Dick Beddoes. You even switched gears to Kane & Crosby because Kucherov doesn't have much playoff success.

Kucherov does have a lot of playoff success.

How is this thread three pages long and no one has asked what the hell "human body has only limited amount of muscle cells" is supposed to mean and how that relates to no player ever being as good as McDavid again?

Don't you know? Since the 80s, sports science has been increasing the number of muscle cells in the human body. That's why players are so much better now than they used to be. But we're running out of room in the human body, and soon we won't be able to add any more muscle cells.

(Nothing about this post was serious, by the way.)

No offense, but this is the most difficult thread since the one I personally started about having a hard time liking Jack Hughes.

Yes when the cyborg players are introduced we will see 300 MPH wristers that go through the net and all the stands. They will play at 200 MPH, while deking through at least 2 players at a time.

McDavid is a very good player but he is not head and shoulders above his peers, slightly better maybe but not by a mile. The only 2 players I have seen in that class after 50 years of watching hockey are Orr and TGO. Orr was way ahead of anyone in his prime, kind of like Babe Ruth or Wilt.

There will be a player that can skate and have the same skills of a McDavid at Charra's size some day in the not so distant future. Think of Lebron James or Zion Williamson as to what is possible size and skill wise in the NHL.

Eichel isn’t in the same tier as McDavid for natural talent, speed and how he thinks the game. MacKinnon is the smartest offensive player in the game. He’s developed into a truly special player a monster on the puck. Matthews is at the moment a one trick pony but his scoring is truly elite. Matthews usually rolls with Nylander, Kapanen, etc but not Tavares or Marner so the linemate comment doesn’t fit.

you can reasonably argue Eichel over Matthews but they are the same tier. No chance anyone could put together a valid argument that Eichel > McDavid or MacKinnon

Eichel is elite.

I think it's fair to say he's the best skater of all time, but I don't think the other two things you mentioned are something he's the best at right now, particularly shooting. People are always evolving though, I'm sure we'll see someone better.

He's arguably #1 in stickhandling, passing and hockey sense as well, if not top 3 in each. His shooting is well above average but not close to the best.

No need to under cut the traits McDavid has in order argue against the OP.

McDavid's complete combination of traits is unmatched in this league. I don't see how that's disputable. Only individual player that's close on "the scary to deal with defensively" tier is MacKinnon. That's speed and IQ for you.

The only argument against it... is team related achievements people will attempt to use.

to answer the OP... yes... We will eventually another top 1-2 skater in the league one day that also happens to the smartest player on the ice... He too will be a dominate individual.

Are we forgetting about the guy who scored 128 points last season?

Compared with other sports, there's less people on the planet playing hockey so the chance of one guy to rise above the rest is good enough to me. Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Roy, Hasek, Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, these guys seems to come steadily enough and I don't see any reasons for it to stop. People don't score 200 points anymore but we're still able to make the difference between McDavid and others, for exemple (not vs Kucherov if he outscores him again though).

I think we're due for a new Hasek/Roy, though.

Mcdavid 1.3 ppg on pace 5th all time
kucherov 1.0 ppg not even on pace for 50th all time.

Mcdavid art ross 50% of his career, only other player to do this is Gretzky.
kucherov 16% of his career.

Mcdavid age 22 ppg seasons 4.
kucherov age 26 ppg seasons 3.

Mcdavid 100% of his seasons have been above ppg.
kucherov 50% of his seasons have been under ppg.

Kucherov's best season > McDavid's best season. Can you say that any of Gretzky's peers had a better season than his best?

I don't understand the question. McDavid is not the lone superstar in the NHL. Heck, he is not even the lone superstar on his team.

Drai is a star but people have a misunderstanding of what a superstar truly is..
McDavid
Crosby
Gretzky
Mario
Orr
guys of that caliber who are head and shoulders above the rest.. Granted, I see the media as having ruined what a superstar is by listing guys as Megastars.. but the point is the same..
Superstar
McDavid
Crosby
Stars
Drai
MacK
Matthews
Marner
Etc... as an example

Mcdavid is 22, when kucherov was 22 his best season was under 70 points, Mcdavid hasn’t even played a season in his prime yet and you are talking about best seasons lol.

I also disagree that just because kucherov had a few more points playing with Stamkos, Point, Hedman , Johnson on the power play compared to Draisaitl, Caggiula, Klefbomb and Larsson that he had a better season.
