If you’re gonna use those stats, you also have to report that the Lightning have a vezina calibre goalie and very good defense. Kane ain’t working with a whole lot.

I am just putting the head to head stats together, next closest scorer and team performance which seems to be the big 3 things to look at..I think Kucherov is just on a stacked team and what Kane is doing is far superior, but I am also a homer who doesn't see Kuch play every game.

There's a lot of grey area to the Hart trophy thanks to the wording, which I don't have a problem with.

Last year, I was on board with Taylor Hall getting the award over McDavid, despite McDavid having the better year.

Why? Because it's for the most valuable player.

If you're going to have value, it has to be value towards something. If I give you $20 off on a product worth $100, that's a hell of a lot more VALUE than $20 off (the same raw number) something worth $10000.

And I think that's fine. If the Hart was awarded for best player instead of most valuable, then it's redundant because of the Lindsay. It would also be awarded to the same guy every year for 5-10 years at a time, rendering it pretty much meaningless beyond letting the 1% of the league fluff their HOF resume.

Kane is in the same place as McDavid.

If the Blackhawks miss the playoffs, what is Kane's value. Instead of missing the playoffs by x points, they would have missed the playoffs by 3x points. As the league is currently set up (and has been for a long time) that gap isn't worth ****.

So:

If Kane continues at his current ludicrous pace, and the Blackhawks make the playoffs, I'd give him the Hart and the Lindsay.
If Kane continues at his current ludicrous pace, and the Blackhawks miss the playoffs, I'd give him the Lindsay, but not the Hart.

Based on what? Being the second best one-dimensional offensive point-producer? Being one of maybe half a dozen players who are on a tier immediately below McDavid & Crosby?

Its a seasonal award. Kane is certainly a tier below McDavid and Crosby sum total, but his performamce this season has not been. He’s probably played as well or better than anybody in the league this season.

Then why won't the players vote for Kucherov then? He's the one scoring the most points.

They very well might.

Just because Id personally vote for Kane as most outstanding player doesnt mean Kucherov is a bad choice.

Patrick Kane has officially reached the 2nd highest point total in his career...in only 59 games..90 points is now his second highest point totals ever beating out his 88 and 89 point seasons respectively...16 points away from tying his 106 point MVP season....holy lord is this man on fire!

So he has reached the second highest point total of his career in 59 games.

Kane, Toews, DeBrincat and Strome have been so much fun in what has been a trying season with this team's fate up in the air.

Kucherov might seem like the logical candidate just based on having a monster scoring year but there is must more to it than that. Tampa's goaltending, D, and top 6 have just been incredible and they are the odds on favorites to take the Cup. I think Kucherov's performance is much more team based and he is helped by having a great line.

IF the Hawks make the playoffs and if Kane is within 5 points of Kucherov then I think he should and will win it. If one or both of those things don’t happen then he shouldn’t.

Lots of main board hand ringing about the Hart trophy. I don’t think it should go to any top 5 scorer on a bubble team, but Kane is having a fantastic season. The Hawks would be a bottom 5 team for sure. Toews, DBC, and Gus wouldn’t be putting up anywhere near the point totals they are now either.

Assuming no injuries and both players keep up their current pace:

Kane will win if the Hawks make the playoffs.
Kucherov will win if the Hawks miss the playoffs.

Kucherov is just having an utterly dominant year, but I don't think it'd be controversial to say that Kane was more valuable if the Hawks make the playoffs.

I think the 5 points point is debatable. Hall won the Hart last year despite being 15 points behind the leading scorer. Granted, it's a little bit different because the leading scorer last year didn't make the playoffs. But being an Art Ross winner is not always a lock for the Hart- I think 4 times in the last 10 years the award has gone to different player?

I said this on the mainboard, but the Lightning are basically on a historic run. If they continue on their current pace, they'd finish with the 4th most points in NHL history. The highest totals since the Canadiens in 1977/8. They have 3 players on pace to get 100 points, 3 players in the top ten in scoring, a goalie who's tied for 1st in save percentage, and an elite d-man on a great year. It doesn't diminish Kucherov's accomplishments in anyway, shape or form. He's absolutely insane this year. But to say his team is stacked is putting it lightly. I don't know how much the voters care about that, but I wonder if Hall from last year points to them considering context in team performance. But tbf I'm biased haha

You've been rather quiet lately...I wonder why...

Have I? I've just been enjoying some good Hawks hockey and I feel this board is just too negative with all the constant tank for Hughes crap.... When I have said all along as long as Kane is in the lineup this team will not finish at the bottom.

Now as I expected he is going to put this team in the playoffs almost by himself while pretty much saving Toews career who may even finish top 30 in scoring.

Weither that is good for the future is up for debate but i'm just enjoying watching the Hawks win.

Towed saved Toews career. He is clearly a different player this season. You have been absent because your your shtick is dead. Might be time to go back to the Cauncks boards. ;)

Kaner has 2 games in hand and is 9 points behind Kucherov. If he can somehow get 5-6 points in the next 2 games that will put the points race in a much tignter spot. I doubt as this point he will win it but 24 games to go.
