Even taking into account the 4 games missed this year from signing a bit late, he has played 1,670 of the 1,705 games that have technically been available for him to play in since he was drafted in 1997.

Finishing out this year playing the remaining 65 games (hasn't missed a game since 2008/09) would put him at 1,735 games, 33 back of breaking Howe's record of 1,767. He'll be 40 for the duration of this season and would be 41 for the entire 2020/21 season if he's back.

He’ll certainly be a good enough hockey player to play in the NHL next year, but it will be a matter of if he wants to keep playing or not. If he does he’ll break it for sure.

I hope he doesn't. I'm usually excited for breaking records but Howe's GP record is one that I don't think should be broken. It wouldn't feel right.

Why? Marleau's durability is insane. Hall missed more games last year than Marleau has in a 22 year career.

It really wont be. Howe played an extra 419 games in the WHA. Even if he does play more NHL games he wont be remotely close to that total. I dont think anyone will see Marleau as playing the most games even if he does break his NHL record.

I'm a big Marleau fan, but I kind of agree - it's pretty fitting that Howe has that record

Hopefully he breaks the record. Didn’t realize he was that close.

If Marleau breaks Howe's record it will probably add to Howe's legacy instead. Then Howe won't be slammed for compiling his points simply by playing more games than any other hockey player in NHL history.

Some records are better, not broken. This one, and the Gretzky total goals record Ovi is chasing.

I think as long as Marleau keeps getting his ice baths during intermissions of games, he has a really good shot at beating Howe, unfortunately.

Those records are apples and oranges, though. Ovechkin is chasing Gretzky’s goal record via helping his team accomplish the primary objective of the game of hockey, where as Marleau is chasing Howe’s GP record by hanging on for dear life in his 40s.

Agreed but it seems like that'll be the talk next few years. Who doesn't like hearing about records potentially being broken?

Any other records you know that will be broken soon?

Marleau is still a serviceable NHL player, even if the underlying numbers indicate otherwise in the small sample of this season so far.

I have no feelings if he breaks it or not but I think he will.

I don't know if that means all that much considering that Howe spent six years in the WHA, and didn't play for two years before that.

the two records you mention are not comparable. Yes marleau could break it and it wouldn’t feel right because Howe played 7 seasons in the WHA and also because he played in the nhl at 51-52 years old. So it feels like it should be his record.

while the Gretzky record that Ovechkin is chasing is completely different. For one if Ovechkin hits 894 goals it’s way more impressive than Wayne’s 894 goals. It would be 100% deserving if Ovechkin broke it.

Last few years all Ovi does is cruise in offensive zone waiting for a pass to do his automatic one-timer. It's getting boring. He used to score all different kinds of ways. If this is how he plans on breaking the Great One's goal total record, I rather not see it, tbh. Great player don't get me wrong, I'll probably be attacked by Caps fans but I've said it.

Even though it was easier to score back then, Gretzky scored a **** tonne. He wasn't considered even a goal scorer but a playmaker. That is amazing. I don't think I'd ever put Ovi over Gretz even if he ends up beating the record.

Well if you think that’s all ovy does then I guess all’s I can say is watch more games. You might want to check his pp vs even strength stats last year as well. Beat Gretzkys goal record and u won’t consider him a better goal scorer? Haha Gretzky scored the bulk of his goals on tendys that wouldn’t crack my senior team. And that’s not a joke

You'd be crazy not to sign with any team at any price that's willing to play you.

That would be a hell of a record to turn down if he had any opportunity to break it.

If Marleau breaks that record he will become the greatest of all time.

Agreed. IMO anybody (aka Howe) who plays well into their 50s in a professional league deserves to keep that record.

I have nothing against Marleau, he's a solid player. But opening up the record book 30 years from now and seeing Marleau's name instead of Howe for all time games played, considering all Howe did for hockey, would kind of rub me the wrong way too.

I was onboard with Jagr breaking it as he was super old and a legend himself. But Marleau all times games played record holder? Ugh.....

Roenick thinks it's gutless Marleau even has the gall to try.

Nice to sweep under the carpet the 419 games that Howe played in the WHA...

The underlying numbers also indicated that he was hardly a serviceable NHL player in the 82 game sample of last season.
