The difference is that Laine is too streaky. He gets red hot then goes ice cold for 10 games. OV's right at the top and he hasn't even had a hattrick yet. He goes consistently all season then after new year gets hot and runs away with it. Same old story.

I wouldnt bet money on OV winning the race this year. Theres too much competition this time around. Young guys mature while OV isnt getting quicker or better so yeah...

OV isn't getting any better but he doesn't need to. He's still better than everyone else.

I don’t like Ovechkin. But I mean that in like, I don’t like all the bad things that dude does to my favorite team. He’s a bad man. There will be many “Laines” left in his wake.

I disagree with you about "high streakiness" of Patrik Laine as an absolute measure, but I agree with you if it's used as relative measure in OV-Laine comparison (over directly comparable careers since 2016-17). OV is probably The most consistent goals scorer playing there, if not the most consistent all time (among top scorers). Ovi is the standard and measuring stick we compare other players and how streaky they are.

Difference in patterns:

OV:
111100001110000110110001100021001210012200110101131021101001000001001000110203 - 3401100100000111000000113011100011000010210010011020001010110210100020011001000112 -
1120020200201100001201111

PL:
1003002000011300010000001210100001010001100110000031102101000100010000200 - 0101002000011111001010000111100001110000000110010110101001111202231110020000000100 -
1000101000003110003215

PL's streaks and slumps are typically slightly longer than OV's, but can we truly claim that PL is "streaky"? He is more streaky in relative comparison to OV, but can we say he is that generally in absolute sense of the word? I think we cannot.

This would be actually good topic for a thread to discuss what exactly constitutes a player being streaky or consistent (both in goal scoring and overall scoring), but I am wrong person to start such thread. Question itself is interesting.

EDIT: Correction, noticed one extra '0' in PL's pattern "....01001111200223111..." Oh shit! That's it! Now he has sunken to a bottomless depths of the swamp of streakiness. :sarcasm:

The only comparison Laine has to Ovechkin is his shot. Both are fantastic goal scorers, but the similarities end there. Ovechkin is a Beast, he’s so damn explosive, a freight train that runs over people. The ability to turn it up a notch when it counts, he’s a much more dynamic player.

Last season Ovechkin scored in 37 games, Laine scored in... wait for it... 37 games.

We know Ovechkin isn't done scoring for the season and he does have his eyes on the Rocket. Neither do I think Laine is done scoring, so the race is on. Might be an even tighter race than last year. But others will join the race as well. I think Pastrnak will be right there with them to the end. It's impossible to say for a certainty who will be neck and neck in the race in the last weeks of the season. There's so many variables that could change everything; injuries and trades for new line-mates etc. Ovechkin is definitely a favourite even if he would lag a couple goals behind through January. However, Laine should be developing his talent at his age, so he might improve his game during the season. We don't know, but my guess is Laine will score one or two more goals to get the Rocket.

Lets hope we get 3 50-goal-scorers. That would be amazing!

If you go back and look at most of ovechkin rockets, you would notice nearly every time he was behind people in nov-jan and always pulls away in feb

Last season Laine was still tied with him march 18th so I guess he's getting closer ;)

@KoozNetsOff 92 Addition to previous comment. Entire regular season goal scoring pattern of Alexander Ovechkin.

This is as consistent and least streaky goal scoring pattern there is i.e. it's average "streakiness" is very low. Still there are few times 9GP long slumps and several 6GP-slumps...
Now we start fit Laine's considerably short career pattern to that overall background of Ovi...

How much more streakier Laine really is?

Not trying to antagonize intentionally here, I want really know how Laine can be called "streaky", but OV not. :)

And to answer to that topical question: if there is one hockey player who can make comebacks in hockey scoring,

It's Alexander Ovechkin.

And anyway - I don't think Laine will score more. Durability plays a big part in Ovi being where he is. He's barely missed any games in his career. In fact, only 29 games in 13 seasons.

Yep and 7 of those are suspensions. I believe some of those also are games he werent allowed to play for not going to a couple of the all star games. So not many missed games due to injury.

He also went to Russia for his grandmom's (?) funeral back in 09-10 season and missed few games because of that. It's incredible how little games he's lost due to injury.

Why so many Finns like Ovechkin.

I'm not sure if it's a Finnish thing, OV's pretty popular player all around hockey countries. But personally for me, having only two true superstars from Finland (Kurri and Selanne) and both being goal-scorers I kind of developed a taste for goal-scoring wingers and when it comes to goal-scoring wingers there's maybe no-one better than Ovechkin.

But if you looked at the reactions of Caps winning the cup, everyone involved in hockey was excited to see Ovechkin win. I guess he's just likeable player.

Just noticed this here on the board, maybe this is coincidence. Laine is also a fan.:sarcasm:

Always liked Selanne. Yes goal scorers or offensive players is the best part of hockey for me too. Goals are fun.

Out of active players they're my #1 and #2 too but I think my order is reversed compared to yours. :D

Selanne is the ultimate favorite of mine though.
Me too. I'm born and raised in Winnipeg, so Selanne was my favourite player as a kid, and will always be my all time favourite player, seeing him play at the HHOF induction game in Toronto with Kariya one last time... even in such a circus of a game, was amazing...

Ovechkin has been my favourite player since Selanne retired, but I can't believe how amazing and full circle it is that Winnipeg got another Finnish scoring sensation in Patrick Laine. Laine has probably edged out Ovechkin for me now, but that's mainly because he's a Jet. Had the SCF been Jets vs Caps last year... I would have felt slightly conflicted cheering against Ovi getting a cup, but nothing, absolutely nothing would beat the cup coming to Winnipeg!

I think Ovechkin will strike back next game, and it's going to be down to the wire between these two players by game 82, possibly decided in the final game.

Ovechkin scored 21 goals as well.

He scored his 21st goal on 6 December 2017 and another 21st goal on 6 December 2018.

The Machine!
