Will a player score 70 goals anytime soon?

If we went into the season with a plan to get Stamkos 70 goals I feel like with our team we could do it. Just have everyone feed him the puck and he isn’t allowed to pass it. Give him all the empty netters and shit as well.

Obviously we would never do this but I feel like it wouldn’t be that hard if you really want it for whatever reason.

If Nathan MacKinnon last season (league leading 365 shots) had scored at Leon Draisaitl's very unsustainable shooting percentage (21.6% on 231 shots) he would have scored 78 goals.

To clean up the numbers a bit someone would have to score at a 20% rate over 350 shots to pot exactly 70 goals. The odds of those two things happening at the same time have to be close to impossible in today's NHL.
The only 2 I see having a chance are Matthews and McDavid.

From the chances they generate.

Even then, I highly doubt we see 70 goals again.

If about 3 900 567 214 500 413 stars aligned, Laine could do it. At this time, I don't think he ever will do it, though.

Pretty much this.

Unless there are drastic rule changes it's unlikely that we ever see 70 goals or heck even another 150 point season.

There is too much emphasis on team defense and goalie technique and equipment for that to happen.

Hasn’t happened since 92-93 with selanne when he had 76 goals that season. Now I don’t want to say ever in the title, as the league constantly goes through shifts at some point or another, and I’m sure it’ll happen again at some point. But in the next decade perhaps, will any player score 70+ goals, and which player could possibly accomplish that?
Hey, Mogilny had 76 that year as well.

Ovechkin didn't hit that plateau. (came close with 65) I doubt anyone else will do it.

Matthews can do it if he gets the ice-time. But, Babs sayin' he should avg. 19 min. a game likely means he won't get it done.

Hard to say. Ovechkin was only a few goals away in 2008. I think I could see it happening.

ovi had ten posts last year, which puts him nine away from 70 if they go in. it'll happen in the next ten years for sure

I think that in this higher scoring season, prime Stamkos could've hit 70.

Stamkos scored 60 in 2011-2012, when league average was 2.73 goals per game. Adjust that for today's NHL, with 3.01 goals per game and you've got 66 goals right there. That's just 4 goals away from 70.

If you adjust Ovechkin's 65 goal season for this season's goals per game, it already is past 70. Ovechkin scored 65 goals when league average was 2.78 goals per game. Adjusted for today's 3.01, that's 70 goals.

in 14-15 ovi had 69 if you combine his post hits (16) with his goals (53), which makes the possibility less than two feet away. That was prior to the net adjustment too

I mean, between mcdcvid, gaudier, duchy and Tarasenko, it'll get done... all still young

Maybe peak OV, if he was transplanted into last year's season. So, in other words, unless you can put arguably the greatest goal scorer of all time, at his peak, in today's league, you're probably not going to do it. So the answer would be no.

Was going to post exactly this. We're witnessing what could be the greatest goal scorer of all time not able to score 70 in this era. With the advancements in the goaltender position since Selanne/Mogilny, I can't envision a new era of scoring that will match the opportunities for shooters.

And I believe Ovechkin is generally regarded as the greatest goal scorer of all time when adjusted for era. So you'll either need a goalscorer greater than Ovechkin, or a higher-scoring era.

I don’t know, I agree Ovi is probably the best ever but for someone to have one season of 70, as unlikely as it may be, isnt going to require a better scorer, just more lucky. Ovis longevity at a high level is a huge part of what makes him great

Even if he has the ability to do it, I have my doubts that Matthews will be healthy enough to do it.

You basically have to play all 82 games and he seems to run into some sort of trouble every year.
